REBECCA MURPHY TO TRANSFER TO FORDHAM

(June 20, 2003) - Fordham Softball Coach Bridget Baxter announced today that second baseman Rebecca Murphy (Meshoppen, PA/Elk Lake) has decided to transfer from Canisius College to Fordham University to play softball. Murphy, the 2002 MAAC Rookie of the Year, played two seasons at Canisius, helping the Golden Griffins to an NCAA playoff berth in 2002. As a freshman, she led the team with a .380 batting average and a .432 on-base percentage, while placing second on the team in hits (54), doubles (10), runs batted in (20), and slugging percentage (.451). Besides the Rookie of the Year Award, she was a First Team All-MAAC selection and an ECAC Second Team All-Star in 2002. To date, Murphy has a career .302 batting average with 84 hits, 17 doubles, and 32 RBI. She joins Krystle Henry (Maywood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) and Sara Kinney (Dripping Springs, TX/Dripping Springs) as newcomers for the 2003-04 season. The Fordham Softball team is currently coming off their most successful season ever. After a 14-43 record in 2002, Fordham had one of the most improved seasons in NCAA history. The Rams finished the year 37-19, the first winning season in Fordham??s 19-year softball history, and went 10-6 in the Atlantic 10 to earn their first ever Atlantic 10 Tournament playoff berth. Founded in 1841, Fordham is New York City's Jesuit University. With 22 men's and women's varsity sports teams, the Fordham Rams are members of the NCAA Division I and compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, indoor and outdoor track, women's rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball and in the Patriot League (NCAA I-AA) for football.
