Fordham University senior rower Deirdre O??Callaghan (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) was named Academic All-Atlantic 10 it was announced today. To earn Academic All-Conference honors a student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve and have a 3.0 gpa for his/her entire career.
O??Callaghan, who received her second straight Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference award, is a major part of Fordham University??s success in the Varsity 8. Last week, she helped the Varsity 8 to the gold medal at the New York State Championships while also leading the crew to a gold medal at the Fall Metropolitan Championships. The Varsity 8 also took the silver medal at the 2003 Jesuit Cup.
The 2002 Atlantic 10 Student-Athlete of the Year for women??s rowing, O??Callaghan has also guided the Varsity 8 to a fourth place finish at the Spring Atlantic 10 Championships and a second place finish at the Fall Atlantic 10 Championships. From her sixth seat, she powered the crew to a third place finish at the prestigious Knecht Cup, which included a win over Princeton University, the defending national champions, in the semifinals.
The academic award is nothing new to O??Callaghan, a Business Administration major, who was named to the USRowing Collegiate Honor Roll (First Team) last year as well as being named Academic All-Atlantic 10. She has been named to the Atlantic 10 Commissioner??s Honor Roll the past four years and compiled a perfect 4.00 gpa this past fall.
