(May 15, 2003) - Fordham University freshman Michelle Schlichtig (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) and junior Jaime Giguere (Escanaba, MI/Escanaba) were named to the 2003 Mid-Atlantic All-Region Softball team as selected by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), it was announced today. Schlichtig was selected to the First Team as a pitcher, while Giguere was a Second Team selection as the designated player.
Schlichtig had an outstanding freshmen season as she was selected the 2003 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and as an All-Conference pitcher. She was honored three times during the season as the Atlantic 10??s Rookie of the Week as well as earning one Pitcher of the Week Citation. Her season has been one to rewrite the Fordham record book, as she has broken six single season pitching records, one career pitching record, and one single season batting record, as well as pitching the first-ever perfect game in Fordham Softball history. On the year, Schlichtig was 22-9 with a 1.46 ERA and 175 strikeouts in 211.2 innings pitched and held opponents to a .216 batting average. Schlichtig broke the Fordham single season pitching records for wins (22), games started (31), complete games (24), shutouts (6), innings pitched (211.2), and strikeouts (175). Her 22 wins also broke the career wins record, which stood at 20. Schlichtig??s ERA is also the second best mark for the school (1.08 - Christina DeLuca, 1994).
Giguere also had a fine season as the designated player as she set career highs with five home runs, 25 runs batted in, 27 walks, and 20 runs scored. She tied the Fordham single-season home run mark, set by Sarah Jones in 1998, and set the single-season walks record, while also tying the mark for career home runs, set by Patty Morrison (1987-91) with nine. Giguere also found success on the mound as she finished with a record of 4-2, a 2.17 ERA, two shutouts, and a league high three saves.
The Fordham Softball team had their best season in its 18-year existence, as they finshed 39-17 overall, 10-6 in the Atlantic 10, making their first-ever Atlantic 10 Tournament appearance. The team mproved 23 1/2 games from last season, which is the seventh best single season turnaround in NCAA history.
