MICHELLE SCHLICHTIG NAMED ATLANTIC 10 CO-PITCHER AND CO-ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

(April 28, 2003) - Fordham University freshman Michelle Schlichtig (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) was named Atlantic 10 Co-Pitcher and Co-Rookie of the Week it was announced today. She shares both honors with Rhode Island freshman pitcher Jenna Thurston. This is Schlichtig's third rookie honor this season, while her first pitcher citation. Schlichtig had an outstanding week, as she went 4-0 with a save, three consecutive shutouts and a perfect game against George Washington on Sunday. On Sunday, she was the winning pitcher in a 12-0 contest over George Washington, where she retired every batter she faced, nine via strikeout. It was the first perfect game or no-hitter in Fordham Softball history, while also being Schlichtig's 21st win, which broke the Fordham career wins record of 20 set by Jennifer Satriale (1990-94). She then capped the day with a save in game two, as she pitched two innings, allowing no hits and striking out four. On Friday, she defeated Temple, 1-0, as she scattered eight hits and struck out five. She began the week with a victory over Fairleigh Dickinson and a 2-0 shutout of Manhattan. She also batted .318 on the week (7-for-22) with three doubles and eight RBI. On the year, Schlichtig is 21-6 on the year with a 1.39 ERA and six shutouts, having struck out 140 batters in 185.2 innings. She has set five Fordham single-season records this season, including wins, complete games, shutouts, innings pitched, and strikeouts, while also setting the Fordham career record for wins. She also leads the team in batting at .338 with 10 doubles and a single season record 30 RBI. The Fordham Softball team is currently having the best season in its 18-year existence, as they are 34-16 overall, 8-6 in the Atlantic 10. The Rams need just one conference win to clinch their first ever Atlantic 10 Playoff berth. Fordham will play their Atlantic 10 doubleheader finale at St. Bonaventure on Friday, May 2 at 3:00 PM.
