FOOTBALL NAMES 2003 CAPTAINS

Kevin Eakin, Colby Khuns, Dan McGrath and Kirwin Watson were named 2003 Fordham football team captains by a vote of the 2003 Rams it was announced at the annual spring game today. Eakin and Watson will serve as offensive captains while Khuns and McGrath will serve as the defensive captains. Eakin, a quarterback who will be entering his senior year, enjoyed a record-setting season in 2002. Despite not having thrown a pass in a varsity game, the he completed 239 of 383 passes for 3,040 yards and 22 touchdowns. He broke Joe Moorhead??s school record of 229 completions in a season set in 1995 while shattering the school record for passing yardage in a season, breaking Carney??s record of 2,700 yards set in 2001. Eakin, the First Team All-Patriot League quarterback, led the Patriot League with an average of 233.8 passing yards/game. Eakin was also 15th in the NCAA I-AA in passing efficiency (143.3 rating), 18th in completions per game (18.38), and 20th in the NCAA I-AA in points responsible for (12.46/game). He had four 300+-passing yard games last season, breaking the Fordham record of three set by Joe Moorhead in 1995 and matched by Matt Georgia in 1999. Watson, the 2002 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and a two-time first-team All-League selection, won his second-straight Patriot League rushing title this year, averaging 112.8 yards per game, while scoring 19 touchdowns (18 rushing) to win the Patriot League scoring crown. He is already eighth on the League's career rushing list with 3,140 yards. Among the I-AA national leaders, Watson was ranked ninth in the nation in both rushing and scoring (8.77 points/game). Watson, who finished tenth in voting for the Walter Payton Award as the top I-AA Player in the country, rushed for 1,467 yards on the year, surpassing the 1,000-yard mark for the second year in a row. He became the first Fordham running back to compile two 1,000-yard seasons. Last year, Watson gained 1,076 yards to become the first Ram to surpass the 1,000-yard mark on the I-AA level. His 1,467 yards is also a Fordham single season record, surpassing Chip Kron??s record of 1,263 set in 1984. Over his career at Fordham, Watson has amassed 631 carries for 3,140 yards and 28 rushing touchdowns. He is second in each category on the Fordham career list. McGrath, a First Team All-Patriot League selection at defensive back in 2002, was second on the team with 81 total tackles, 56 solo, and he added two interceptions and one fumble recovery. He also returned 48 punts for 662 yards and two touchdowns on the season. He shattered the Fordham records of 37 returns and 371 punt return yards in a season, both set by set by Brad Jordan in 1991. He was second in the Patriot League in punt return average (13.8 yards/return) and 12th in the NCAA I-AA. McGrath was one of only three players in the NCAA I-AA to return two punts for touchdowns last season. Khuns, a defensive lineman, appeared in all 13 games last year for the Rams, notching 42 total tackles, 25 solo. Included among the 42 tackles were a team-high 10.5 tackles for a loss, and six sacks. He also registered six pass deflections while recovering one fumble and causing another. The Rams, the defending Patriot League champions who advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA I-AA playoffs last year, open the 2003 season on Saturday, August 30th when they host C.W. Post College on Jack Coffey Field at 1:00 p.m.
