At the Atlantic 10 Awards Banquet on Wednesday, March 5th, senior Mobolaji Akiode (Maplewood, NJ) was awarded with the Atlantic 10??s Most Improved Player Award, as well as Second Team All-Conference honors.
Akiode has had an outstanding senior season, averaging a team best 16.8 ppg and scoring 486 points to date, which is the eighth best single season point total in Fordham history. She also became just the eighth Fordham player to record 1,000 points and 500 rebounds in her career. Akiode currently ranks among the top ten all-time scorers and rebounders in the program??s history with 1,158 points and 553 rebounds.
She earned most improved honors by averaging more than seven points more per game this year compared to last (16.8 from 9.6 ppg), while scoring over 10 points better in conference play (18.6 from 7.9 ppg). Akiode also improved her rebounding and free throw shooting as well. She is shooting .774 from the charity stripe this year, after shooting .716 last season and is averaging 1.5 more rebounds a game overall (5.5 from 4.0), and over 2.5 in conference play (5.6 from 2.9).
She is the first Fordham women??s basketball player to receive a major award as a member of the Atlantic 10. Akiode is also the first Fordham player to receive all-conference honors since Malyssa Thorngren received third team honors, following the 1997-98 season. She is joined on the Second Team by Richmond??s Ebony Tanner and Kate Flavin, Temple??s Stacey Smalls, and George Washington??s Ugo Oha.
Akiode was also named to the Atlantic 10 Second Team All-Conference on March 3rd as selected by the Philadelphia Sports Connection, a media organization which broadcasts independently on 1610 WRFT in Ambler, PA.
