Fordham University freshman pitcher Michelle Schlichtig (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) was named Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Week for the week ending March 30th it was announced today. It is the second Rookie of the Week honor for Schlichtig in 2003.
Schlichtig helped the Rams to a perfect 5-0 week, picking up three wins and almost throwing a perfect game. In 21.0 innings on the week, she struck out 17 while walking just one batter and allowed just ten hits and five runs, two earned.
The three wins gives Schlichtig 11 on the year, breaking the Fordham single season record of ten set by set by Jennifer Satriale in 1992 and matched last year by Carol Fischer.
Schlichtig almost became the first Fordham softball player to throw a perfect game as she took a perfect game into the seventh but gave up a two-out single to Army??s Lauren Bobar on March 26th. She finished the Army game with six strike outs and no walks.
The right-hander also picked up wins against Iona, throwing a complete-game five hitter, striking out six, and Pennsylvania, a complete game four hitter, striking out five.
At the plate, Schlichtig hit .400 (6-15) with four RBI.
On the year, Schlichtig is 11-3 on the mound with a 1.23 ERA. She has 59 strikeouts in 96.2 innings, while walking only 14. At the plate, she is hitting .361 (26-72) with seven doubles, two home runs and 15 RBI.
