CHEERLEADERS READY FOR EXCITING YEAR!

The season never ends for the Fordham University Varsity Cheerleading team. Under the direction of Coach Doreen Franquinha, the team performs at all football, men??s and women??s basketball games and Midnight Madness. In between games they also find time to perform at various Fordham events, volunteer for the Special Olympics and assist local cheerleading teams. This year??s team is comprised of 16 talented girls, eight returning members and eight freshmen. Leading the team as captains are seniors Peggy Ann Torney and Melissa Crowther. Also on the roster is mascot, Joseph Franquinha. This is Joseph??s second year as the Ram and we look forward to seeing what new moves he will come up with this season to entertain the crowd. The team practices three nights a week (with a stronger concentration before competition) and is required to do one hour twice a week in the Varsity weight room on non-practice days. The team travels to the men??s and women??s Atlantic 10 Tournament for basketball and attends away games for football. These athletes have not only been able to perform at Madison Square Garden and the Meadowlands but they have also made appearances at various events including: the New York City Yankee Parade, the televised Revlon Run/Walkathon in Central Park, and a pep rally for the NBA Store in Manhattan. This year our three seniors: Peggy Ann Torney, Melissa Crowther and Alison Montroy were also featured cheerleaders on the cover of the ??Lifeline?? section in the New York Daily News. In the past, the team has placed in various co-ed cheerleading competitions and this year they plan to compete again in the all-girl college division and mascot competition. The 2001-2002 team also had the honor of being the focus of a documentary on college cheerleading for the European television show, Urbanation. This year??s cheer team looks forward to a great season and supporting all the Fordham athletic teams. GO RAMS!
