FOUR FORDHAM FOOTBALL RAMS NAMED TO FOOTBALL GAZETTE I-AA ALL-AMERICA TEAM

Four Fordham University football student-athletes were named to the Don Hansen??s Football Gazette I-AA All-America Team. Junior kick returner Dan McGrath (Webster, NY/Webster) was named a Second Team return specialist and Honorable Mention defensive back, while junior running back Kirwin Watson (Sunrise, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) was named a Third Team running back, junior wide receiver Javarus Dudley (Miramar, FL/American Heritage) was named a Third Team receiver and senior kicker Matt Fordyce (Mentor, OH/St. Ignatius) was named a Third Team kicker. McGrath, a First Team All-Patriot League selection at defensive back in 2002, returned 48 punts for 662 yards and two touchdowns on the season. He shattered the Fordham records of 37 returns and 371 punt return yards in a season, both set by set by Brad Jordan in 1991. He was second in the Patriot League in punt return average (13.8 yards/return) and 12th in the NCAA I-AA. McGrath was one of only three players in the NCAA I-AA to return two punts for touchdowns last season. Defensively, McGrath was second on the team with 81 total tackles, 56 solo, and he added two interceptions and one fumble recovery. Watson, the 2002 Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and a two-time first-team All-League selection, won his second-straight Patriot League rushing title this year, averaging 112.8 yards per game, while scoring 19 touchdowns (18 rushing) to win the Patriot League scoring crown. He is already eighth on the League's career rushing list with 3,140 yards. Among the I-AA national leaders, Watson was ranked ninth in the nation in both rushing and scoring (8.77 points/game). Watson, who finished tenth in voting for the Walter Payton Award as the top I-AA Player in the country, rushed for 1,467 yards on the year, surpassing the 1,000-yard mark for the second year in a row. He became the first Fordham running back to compile two 1,000-yard seasons. Last year, Watson gained 1,076 yards to become the first Ram to surpass the 1,000-yard mark on the I-AA level. His 1,467 yards is also a Fordham single season record, surpassing Chip Kron??s record of 1,263 set in 1984. Over his career at Fordham, Watson has amassed 631 carries for 3,140 yards and 28 rushing touchdowns. He is second in each category on the Fordham career list. Dudley, the 2002 Preseason Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-League selection in 2002, had a team-high 77 catches for 1,106 yards and eight touchdowns last fall. He led the league in receptions/game (5.92) and was second in receiving yards/game (98.5). His 77 catches tied Jerry McDermott??s single season record set in 1999 while the 1,106 receiving yards broke the record of 1,061 set by Dudley last year. Over his three-year career, Dudley has 194 career receptions, breaking Tom Garlick??s (1989-92) career record of 164, and 2,758 career receiving yards, breaking Garlick??s career record of 2,318. He also has 2,172 career kickoff return yards, shattering Robert Davis?? (1996-99) career record of 1,511. Fordyce, a First Team All-Patriot selection as a punter and placekicker, handled all the kicking chores for the Rams in 2002. He connected on 18 of his 26 field goals on the year, including an NCAA and Fordham record five field goals in the playoff win at Northeastern. The 18 field goals on the year is also a Fordham record, breaking Brain Colsant??s 2000 record of 15, as are the 44 PATs kicked by Fordyce, breaking Colsant??s record of 32 set in 2001. Fordyce also punted 57 times for 2,183 yards, an average of 38.3 yards/punt, second best in the league. He placed 21 of his 57 punts inside the opponents 20. He was the first kicker in Patriot League history to be named first team All-League as both the placekicker and punter. Fordham finished the season with a 10-3 overall record, 6-1 in the Patriot League. The Rams advanced to the NCAA I-AA playoffs for the first time in school history, defeating Northeastern, the Atlantic 10 champions, in the first round before falling to Villanova in the quarterfinals. The ten wins are the most on the I-AA level for Fordham (the previous best was 7 last year) while the six Patriot League wins is the most wins in the league for the Rams (the previous best was 5 last year). The Rams finished the year ranked 12th in the nation in the final Sports Network Top 25 poll and 15th in final ESPN/Sportsticker poll.
