(February 3, 2003) - After competing in the Metropolitan Championships this past weekend, senior Deric Zaphire (Bronx, NY/Fordham Prep) was tabbed with Atlantic 10 Men??s Indoor Track & Field Co-Performer of the Week for the week ending February 2. He shares the honor with La Salle??s Pat Nash. Zaphire takes home his second Performer of the Week honor on the year after breaking the Fordham school record in the 500m dash with a time of 1:03.34, tops in the Atlantic 10 season. He surpasses the old mark of 1:03.79, set by Gil Valdes in 1984. Zaphire also ran a leg of the 4 X 800 relay team that placed second in a time of 7:45.84. Both his 500m time and the 4 X 800 relay time qualified for the IC4A Championships in March. Founded in 1841, Fordham is New York City's Jesuit University. With 22 men's and women's varsity sports teams, the Fordham Rams are members of the NCAA Division I and compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, indoor and outdoor track, women's rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball and in the Patriot League (NCAA I-AA) for football.
