FORMER FORDHAM SOCCER PLAYER JOHN WOLYNIEC SELECTED TO THE SENIOR U.S. NATIONAL TEAM TRAINING CAMP

(December 18, 2003) - Former Fordham men??s soccer player John Wolyniec, who is currently playing for the NY/NJ MetroStars of the MLS, was called up to the senior U.S. National team last week for the December Training Camp in Carson, CA. Wolyniec is one of eight newcomers that are getting their first opportunity on the senior U.S. National Team, under the watchful eye of U.S. manager Bruce Arena. Wolyniec finished fifth on the MetroStars in scoring this past season with five goals and two assists for 12 points, appearing in 25 contests and starting 14. ??This is definitely a new experience, but it??s exciting. He (Arena) has got the prestige of being the national team coach, but he??s more of a laid back guy than I expected him to be. He??s pretty much just let us play so far, without stopping training and having too much to say,?? said Wolyniec in an interview for ussoccer.com. For more of ussoccer.com??s interview, go to http://www.ussoccer.com/news/fullstory.sps?iNewsid=50411. Wolyniec, who was selected in the first round (seventh overall pick) by the New York/New Jersey Metro Stars of the Major League Soccer (MLS) in 1999, rejoined the MetroStars at the beginning of the 2003 season. Wolyniec closed out his senior year at Fordham by being named the 1998 Atlantic 10 Men??s Soccer Player of the Year. He led the Atlantic 10 in scoring that year with 25 goals and 10 assists for 60 points. His 60 points also led the NCAA Division I (3.00 points/game) and his 25 goals placed him fourth in the NCAA Division I (1.25 goals/game). His 25 goals is a Fordham single-season record, surpassing the mark of 24 that he set in 1997. The 60 points is also a Fordham single-season record, breaking the old mark of 54 he set in 1997. Wolyniec is Fordham??s all-time leading score with 184 career points and the all-time leading goal scorer with 75. He shattered the old records of 106 career points and 44 career goals set by Jack Shannon from 1979-82. Wolyniec was named First Team GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-America? in 1999 after earning Third Team honors as a junior in 1998. He received the 1998 and 1999 Vincent T. Lombardi Award as Fordham University??s Top Male Athlete.
