The Patriot League released their 2003 Football All-Conference Teams and major awards today as 12 Fordham Rams were selected to the All-Patriot League team, including seven on the First Team, while freshman placekicker Micah Clukey (St. Augustine, FL) was named Patriot League Freshman of the Year. Quarterback Kevin Eakin (Coral Springs, FL), running back Kirwin Watson (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), wide receiver Javarus Dudley (Hollywood, FL), offensive lineman Prince Poitier (Deerfield Beach, FL), defensive linemen Colby Khuns (Hilton, NY) and Aki Jones (Jamaica, NY), and defensive back Tad Kornegay (Trenton, NJ) were all First Team All-Patriot League selections, while offensive lineman Kevin Oefelein (Brooklyn, NY), Clukey, linebacker NaQuinton Gainous (Tallahassee, FL), defensive back Will Davis (Camden, NJ), and punter Stephen Ayers (Irvine, CA) were Second Team selections. The 12 All-Patriot League picks tied for the most by a team this season, as Colgate also had 12 players selected to the All-Patriot League teams.
Clukey had an outstanding freshman season, as he led the Patriot League in kick scoring with 80 points, including 47-for-51 on PATs and 11-for-14 on field goal attempts. His 47 made PATs broke Matt Fordyce's record of 44 set last season.
Making their third appearance on the First Team All-Patriot League Team are Dudley and Watson. Dudley, a three-time first-team All-League choice who was the 2001 Offensive Player of the Year, broke the season records for receptions (101) and receiving yards (1,439) as well as the career marks for receptions (295), receiving yards (4,197), TD receptions (tied record of 34), kickoff return yardage (2,663) and all-purpose yards (7,121). Watson, also a three-time All-Patriot League first-team player and the 2002 Offensive Player of the Year, twice tied the Patriot League mark for rushing TDs in a game (5) while finishing second in the Patriot League in rushing this season (1,477). Watson finished his career third on the League all-time rushing list (4,617), second in scoring (282) and fifth in all-purpose yards (4,994).
Making his second straight appearance on the First Team is Eakin, who was the top QB in the Patriot League for the second-straight year after completing 60.7% of his passes (247-for-407) for 3,072 yards, both League-leading marks. He finished his career 11th on the Patriot League career passing yards list (6,112) and 12th on the total offense list (5,944).
Poitier, who earns his first all-conference nod, and Oefelein, who makes his second Second Team appearance, were keys to the success of Eakin, Watson and Dudley the past two seasons, helping the Rams rank among the NCAA leaders in passing offense (15th, 258.8), total offense (32nd, 369.83) and scoring offense (21st, 32.17).
Khuns, Jones, and Kornegay all pick up their first all-conference nods, while Gainous and Davis were both second-team All-League choices in 2002. Gainous topped the Rams with 89 tackles while Kornegay was second with 71 hits and team-highs of four interceptions and 15 pass break ups. Davis chipped in 59 tackles to rank sixth on the team. Kuhns, who had 49 total stops, shared the Patriot League lead with 15.5 tackles for loss, including three sacks, and added six pass break ups. He paired with Jones, who had 35 stops, including 9.5 in the opposing backfields, on the front wall for the Rams.
Ayers rounds out the group earning second-team recognition after finishing second in the Patriot League with a 38.5 yard punting average.
Fordham, the 2002 Patriot League Co-Champions, finished the 2003 campaign with a 9-3 overall record, and 4-3 conference mark.
