FORDHAM BASEBALL SIGNS SEVEN PLAYERS FOR 2005

(November 24, 2003) - Fordham Baseball Coach Dan Gallagher announced the signing of seven recruits today as the Rams signed infielders Richard Goulian (Kinnelon, NJ/Seton Hall Prep), Eric Reese (Sparta, NJ/Sparta), and Daniel Leach (Yonkers, NY/Iona Prep), right-handed pitcher/first baseman Ryan Walker (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh), right-handed pitchers Ryan Sheflott (Avon, CT/Avon Old Farms) and Cory Riordan (Killingworth, CT/Haddam-Killingworth), and outfielder/right-handed pitcher Thomas Davis (Madison, CT/Daniel Hand). "I am extremely pleased with our 2004 early signing period class," said Head Baseball Coach Dan Gallagher, "Nick Restaino, our recruiting coordinator, has done an outstanding job identifying and bringing in quality players that are truly student-athletes. They are a very talented bunch, and it is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire staff for us to sign a group like this." Davis, a senior at Daniel Hand High School, is a two-year captain of the baseball team and was selected as the Offensive Player of the Year as a junior after hitting .379. A First Team All-SCC Hammonasset selection, he also had a pitching record of 5-5 with a 2.36 ERA in 56.1 innings to go with 56 strikeouts. Goulian, a senior at Seton Hall Prep this year, helped the baseball team to the New Jersey State Championship and a #4 ranking in the country in 2003. A former Rookie of the Year award recipient, he hit .426 on the year with 34 runs scored and stole 11 of 12 bases last season. Goulian was also an All-County men's soccer player as well as a member of the National Honor Society and a Peer Leader at Seton Hall Prep. Leach, a senior at Iona Prep, was the starting shortstop for the City Championship team in 2003. He hit .453 as a junior, and was selected to the All-City team and named MVP of the Doug Faul Tournament. He is currently serving as team captain of the Iona Prep squad this coming year. Reese, a senior at Sparta High School, helped Sparta to the Sussex County Interscholastic League Championship in 2003. He hit .351 last year, while being named Second Team All-State Group III and First Team All-Northwest Jersey by the New Jersey Star Ledger. He was also First Team All-League and First Team All-Area as selected by the New Jersey Herald. Riordan, a senior at Haddam-Killingworth High School, was a Hartford Courant All-State pick as a junior after going 11-3 on the mound with a 0.54 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 92 innings. He allowed just seven earned runs as a junior, being named as an All-Conference selection in each of the last two seasons, while earning All-Area honors as a junior. Sheflott, a senior at Avon Old Farms School, helped his team to the 2003 Colonial League Championship, going 5-1 with a 2.76 earned run average with 33 strikeouts in 29.1 innings pitched. He was also a member of the 2002 USSSA 17U National Champions. Walker, a senior at Wantagh High School, was an All-Conference "A" selection as a junior. Last season, he split time at pitcher and first base, hitting .317 on the year, while posting a 4-0 record with a 2.85 ERA and 25 strikeouts. Founded in 1841, Fordham is New York City's Jesuit University. With 22 men's and women's varsity sports teams, the Fordham Rams are members of the NCAA Division I and compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, indoor and outdoor track, women's rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball and in the Patriot League (NCAA I-AA) for football.
