FORDHAM'S BETH PURCELL NAMED ATLANTIC 10 WOMEN'S SOCCER CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK

(October 13, 2003) - Fordham University junior Beth Purcell (Lake Elmo, MN/Stillwater Area) was named Atlantic 10 Women's Soccer Co-Player of the Week for the week ending Ocotber 12th. She shares the honor with Erica Young of Rhode Island. Purcell is the third different Fordham player to earn a weekly honor this season, as Sarah Hopkins and Natasha Kayulu have each earned Rookie of the Week honors. This is also Purcell's second career Atlantic 10 honor as she earned Rookie of the Week once as a freshman. Purcell helped Fordham to two conference wins this weekend, as the Rams pushed their conference record to 4-0-1 in the Atlantic 10, good for sole possesion of first place in the conference. Purcell had a goal and three assists this weekend, as she had two assists in the Rams' 7-0 win over Temple on Friday, while having a goal and an assist in Sunday's 4-3 win over Saint Joseph's. She has now set career highs this season with three goals and five assists for 11 points. The Fordham Women's Soccer team is currently 8-3-1 overall on the year, and is unbeaten in their last seven games (6-0-1). Fordham will be in action this week with home Atlantic 10 games against Rhode Island on Friday, October 17th at 2:00 PM and against Massachusetts on Sunday, October 19th at 1:00 PM. Founded in 1841, Fordham is New York City??s Jesuit University. With 22 men??s and women??s varsity sports teams, the Fordham Rams are members of the NCAA Division I and compete in the Atlantic 10 Conference in baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, indoor and outdoor track, women??s rowing, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball and in the Patriot League (NCAA I-AA) for football.
