(January 27, 2003) - Fordham University sophomore Erika Newell (Branford, CT/Branford) was named Atlantic 10 and ECAC Women??s Swimming & Diving Performer of the Week, following four events wins this past week as the Fordham Women??s Swimming and Diving team had a 3-0 record. This is the second A-10 weekly conference honor for Newell this season, as she was honored back in December, and her first from the ECAC.
Newell claimed the 200 backstroke (2:07.17) and 200 individual medley against Marist on January 21, while also helping the 400 medley relay team to a win. She then posted first place overall finishes in the 200 freestyle (1:57.42) and 200 individual medley (2:07.93) in the dual meet against La Salle and Seton Hall on January 25. Newell was also a part of both relay team victories (400 medley and 400 freestyle) in that dual meet.
With the 3-0 record this week, the Fordham Women??s Swimming & Diving team is 10-3 on the year, 3-0 in the Atlantic 10. The team will next be in action on Saturday, February 1, as they host Atlantic 10 opponent, the University of Massachusetts, at the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center at 1:00 PM.
