Kevin Eakin Named Starting Quarterback for Fordham

(Aug. 30, 2002) - Fordham University head football coach Dave Clawson named junior Kevin Eakin (Coral Springs, FL/Douglass) as the starting quarterback for the 2002 season. "Both Kevin and Mike Mucci played well throughout camp," said Clawson. "It was a tough decision, but a good tough decision. Both quarterbacks played well the last couple of days. Kevin was throwing the ball with more consistency and showed good mobility out of the pocket when a play would break down." "This team needs two quality quarterbacks to be successful and they both know that," continued Clawson. "Even though Kevin will be starting, Mike Mucci will be playing quite a bit this year." Eakin has seen limited playing time for the Rams over the past two years. He is a graduate of Douglass High School in Parkland, Florida where he was a First Team All-Broward County selection. "I'm really excited," said Eakin. "Coach Clawson kept us waiting all through camp and we were surprised that he made the decision today. I can't wait to get the season started and do whatever I can to help the win." The Fordham coaching staff also finalized starters at the other positions. Behind Eakin in the backfield will be junior tailback Kirwin Watson and senior fullback Alemayo Whyte, both starters in 2001. The receivers and tight end will also be the same as in 2001 with junior Javarus Dudley and Peter Modelski at wide out and junior B at tight end. On the offensive line the two returning starters will be senior John San Marco will start at right guard and junior Prince Poitier at left guard. Joining them will be junior Kevin Oefelein at right tackle, sophomore Jared Amatuzzo at center and senior Joe Barmess at left tackle. On the defensive line three starters return in senior Aymen Aboushi at left tackle, senior Anthony Amanzio at right end and junior Colby Khuns at left end. Filling out the line will be junior Alfred Bartley at right tackle. The linebacking corps will be comprised of senior Rhamel Brown and sophomore Na'Quinton Gainous on the outside and sophomore Tommy Holloway in the middle. In the secondary, junior Will Davis and sophomore Thad Kornegay will start at the corners with junior Dan McGrath at the strong safety and senior Chris Rhodes at free safety. Davis, McGrath and Rhodes are all returning starters. Fordham opens the 2002 season on Saturday, September 7th when the Rams host St. Peter's College on Jack Coffey Field at 1:00 p.m. For ticket information contact the Fordham Ticket Office at 718-817-4300.
