(Sept. 16, 2002) ?C Fordham University junior running back Kirwin Watson (Sunrise, FL/St. Thomas Aquinas) was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week for games of September 14th it was announced today.
Watson carried the ball 23 times for 157 yards and two touchdowns in Fordham??s 40-31 win over Colgate University on Saturday. He gained 70 of his 157 yards in the fourth quarter and scored both his touchdowns in the final six minutes. The first score was on a nine-yard run which gave the Rams the lead for good, 33-31 with 5:54 left in the game. He then iced the game with a seven-yard scoring run with 1:37 remaining. The game was the fifth 100+ rushing game of Watson??s career, who also caught a pass in the Colgate game for five yards.
On the year, Watson is averaging a Patriot League best 118.0 yards/game, tied for tenth best in the NCAA Division I-AA.
The win broke a six-game losing streak for the Rams against Colgate and gives Fordham a seven-game winning streak dating back to last season. The win also puts the Rams at 2-0 on the year, the first 2-0 start for Fordham since the 1997 season.
The Rams will travel into Manhattan this week to face Columbia University on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. in the inaugural Liberty Cup game against the Lions. The game will be televised live by the YES Network.
