ERIKA NEWELL NAMED ATLANTIC 10 WOMEN??S SWIMMING & DIVING PERFORMER OF THE WEEK

(December 9, 2002) - Fordham University sophomore Erika Newell (Branford, CT/Branford) was named Atlantic 10 Conference Women??s Swimming & Diving Performer of the Week, following two record breaking performances this past weekend. This is the first weekly conference honor for Newell, and the first for a Fordham swimmer this season. At the Bucknell Invitational this past weekend, Newell won two individual events, setting new Fordham records in each. She first broke her own 100 backstroke record on Saturday for the fourth time this season as she posted a time of 56.93. Newell then topped the 200 backstroke record on Sunday, passing Loraine Grein??s (??92) record, in a time of 2:05.01. Both times were also Bucknell pool records. She also helped the 200 freestyle relay team to a first place finish over the weekend. The team finished second at the Bucknell Invitational, and is currently 5-3 on the year. The Fordham Swimming & Diving teams are now on winter break and will next be in action on January 17 as they travel to Yale for a 5:00 PM meet start.
