BASKETBALL SEASON STARTS WITH SNEAK(ER) PREVIEW

On Thursday night, November 7th, the Fordham University student body got its first look at the 2002-03 men??s and women??s basketball Rams at the 2002 Sneak(er) Preview. Emceed by WFUV??s Michael Ratti, the night started off with the introduction of the women??s team followed by a brief comment from women??s junior co-captain Patricia Williams. Head women??s coach Jim Lewis then brought the fans up to date on the status of his squad, commenting on the hard work the team has been displaying at practice so far this year and highlighting the 2002-03 schedule, which features a trip to the Hawaii Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic, the first ever Hawaii trip by the Fordham women??s basketball team. The tournament, which runs from November 30th through December 2nd, features defending NCAA champions, the University of Connecticut, as well as runners-up the University of Oklahoma and North Carolina. The men??s squad was then introduced with sophomore center Glenn Batemon speaking on behalf of the men??s team. Head coach Bob Hill then took the microphone and praised his team for their work ethic since the school year began, both on the court and in the classroom. He also encouraged the fans in attendance to come out and support both teams this year and make Rose Hill an intimidating arena for any visiting team. When coach Hill finished, the floor was then opened to the students who participated in a half court shooting contest with the winners, one male and one female, winning two round trip tickets anywhere USAir flies in the continental United States. The tickets were courtesy of USAir. Sodehxo also provided refreshments for all those in attendance. The women??s team will start their exhibition season on Saturday, November 9th when they host the New York Gazelles in the Rose hill Gym at 2:00 p.m. Both teams will then have see exhibition action the following Saturday, November 16th with the women??s facing NWBL at 3:30 p.m. and the men facing Grass Roots Canada at 6:30 p.m. in the Rose Hill Gym. Both teams open the regular season on the road on Friday, November 22nd. The women will travel to Brown University for a 7:00 p.m. game while the men will be at William and Mary for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off. The men??s game will be broadcast live by WFUV (90.7 FM) and online at www.wfuv.org. The women will open their home schedule on Sunday, November 24th when they host Morgan State in Rose hill at 4:00 p.m. while the men open their home schedule on Monday, November 25th by hosting Western Michigan at 7:00 p.m. Each game will feature a pre-game ceremony to recognize the re-opening of the Rose Hill Gym following a $2 million renovation project and the men will also recognize the start of their 100th season of varsity basketball.
