(Nov. 26, 2002) ?C Fordham University junior quarterback Kevin Eakin (Coral Springs, FL/Douglass) was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week for games of November 23rd it was announced today. It is the second consecutive weekly award won by Eakin this season and the third award of the season for Eakin.
Eakin completed 23 of 34 passes for 204 yards and two touchdowns in Fordham??s 34-7 Patriot League win over Bucknell University on Saturday.
The win clinches Fordham??s first ever Patriot League football championship as the Rams finish in a first place tie with Colgate University. Fordham holds the tiebreaker, by virtue of its 40-31 win over Colgate earlier this season, and will represent the league in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs. The Rams will travel to Northeastern University for a first round game on Saturday. It will be Fordham??s first ever appearance in the NCAA I-AA playoffs.
The Rams finish the regular season with a 9-2 overall record, 6-1 in the Patriot League. The nine wins are the most for a Fordham team on the I-AA level (the Rams moved to I-AA in 1989) and the six league wins are the most Patriot League wins. Last year the Rams finished 7-4 overall, 5-2 in the league, which was the first winning record for Fordham on the I-AA level.
The 204 yards also gives Eakin 2,656 yards on the year, the second best total in Fordham history. Eakin is 45 yards short of breaking Fordham??s single-season record of 2,700 set last year by Mark Carney.
On the year, Eakin has completed 203 of 316 passes for 2,656 yards and 21 touchdowns. He leads the Patriot League with an average of 241.5 passing yards/game and in passing efficiency with a 152.3 rating, seventh best in the NCAA I-AA. Eakin is also 13th in the NCAA I-AA in points responsible for (14.18/game) and 17th in completions per game with an average of 18.45.
The 21 touchdown passes for Eakin this year is second best in school history while the 204 completions is the third best single season totals in Fordham history.
