(Oct. 7, 2002) ?C Fordham University freshman Danielle Spigner (Brooklyn, NY/Midwood) was named Atlantic 10 Women??s Tennis Rookie of the Week for the week ending October 6th it was announced today.
Spigner was perfect on the week as the Rams won two of three matches, defeating Long Island University, 4-2, and Hofstra University, 7-0, while falling to St. John??s, 4-3.
In the first match of the week, Spigner was leading Long Island??s Annicris Garcia at sixth singles, 6-2, 2-0 when play was halted in the second set. In the second match against St. John??s, Spigner defeated Jennifer Nantonio, 6-2, 6-3, at sixth singles and then she closed out the week??s singles play by defeating Hofstra??s Jillian Schalk, 6-1, 6-0, at sixth singles.
In doubles action, Spigner combined with Xer-Li Woo at first doubles to win all three matches. Against Long Island the duo defeated Rachael Berenbaum and Leslie Harvey, 8-2, while they bested St. John??s Kristina Bothova and Nataliya Kostova, 8-6. Spigner and Woo closed out the weekend with an 8-7 win over Hofstra??s Mihaela Stefan and Jennifer Freedman, 8-7.
Spigner has compiled a 3-2 record in singles play this fall and a 4-2 doubles record.
