Entering his 39th season with the Fordham Cross Country and Track & Field teams is head coach Tom Dewey. He has been the head coach of the men's track & field program for the past 38 seasons, and returns for his 33rd season at the helm of the women's track & field program, his second stint in charge of the women's program, the first lasting seven years.
Among the highlights of the 2017-18 season, Thomas Slattery ran the fastest five mile cross country time in school history en route to a victory at the Metropolitan Championship, while Ryan Kutch placed second, Slattery and Kutch both earned First-Team All-Atlantic 10 Honors and All-East honors at the IC4A Championship, while Angelina Grebe and Sydney Snow earned All-East honors at the ECAC Championship. In the indoor season, school records were set in the women's 60 meters and 200 meters and in the men's 10,000 meters, 5,000 meters and pole vault. Individually, Ryan Kutch, Thomas Slattery, Brian Cook, Louis Santelli and the 4x800 relay were all Metropolitan Champions, while Kutch also was the Atlantic 10 Champion in the 5,000 meters. In the outdoor season, school records were set in the women's 100 meters, 200 meters, 4x100m, 4x200m and 3,000 meter steeplechase and in the men's 10,000 meters. Individually, Laurel Fisher, Angelina Grebe and Ryan Kutch were Metropolitan Champions, while Kutch also won the 10,000 meters at the Atlantic 10 Championship and Penn Relays and Laurel Fisher placed third in the steeplechase in a school record time at the Atlantic 10 Championship. Fisher and Kutch were also NCAA Regional qualifiers in the 3,000m steeplechase and 10,000 meters, respectively.
Among the highlights in the 2016-17 season, the women's cross country team won the Metropolitan Championship, while the men were fourth and the men's cross country team finished second at the IC4A Championship. Individually, Brian Cook won the cross country Metropolitan Championship and Cook and junior Thomas Slattery were named Atlantic 10 All-Conference finishing 10th and 11th, respectively, at the Atlantic 10 Championship. Cook also set an indoor Atlantic 10 Championship meet record in the mile. Also in the indoor season, Mary Kate Kenny and Nkeka Pinheiro set the school record in the 60 meter dash, with Kenny also setting the school record in the 200 meter dash. Ryan Riviere also set the school record in the pole vault. In outdoor track, freshman Ryan Kutch was selected as the Atlantic 10's Most Outstanding Rookie Performer after winning the 10,000 meter run. Also in the outdoor season, Slattery was a Metropolitan Champion in the 5,000 meters and Louis Santelli was Metropolitan Champion in the 800 meter run. The men's 4x800 and the women's 4x400 relays were also Metropolitan Champions. On the women's side, Kenny set two more school records in the outdoor season in the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes.
Among the highlights during the 2015-16 season, the men's cross country team won the Metropolitan Championship for the fifth time in eight years, while the women were second. Individually, freshman Sean Phillips was selected as the Atlantic 10's Most Outstanding Rookie Performer for indoor track after winning the 1,000 meters, while the women's indoor 4x800 relay captured their event for First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors. In outdoor track, Jonathan Annelli was the conference champion in the 3,000 meter steeplechase event with Brian Cook finishing second in the same event, as both earned All-Atlantic 10 honors.
In 2014-15, Dewey saw the men's cross country team capture its second straight IC4A University Division Championship (fourth overall), with Mike Turi winning medalist honors. The Rams also won the men's Metropolitan Cross Country Championship, while the women's team took second. Individually, the Rams earned All-Atlantic 10 honors in three indoor events (First Team - women's 4x800; Second Team - men's DMR, women's 500 - Fagade) and one outdoor event (Second Team - 800 - Taylor), while seven school records were set.
In 2013, Dewey saw the men's cross country team win the IC4A University Division Championship for the third time overall, with Jonathan Annelli winning the race for top honors. Individually, high jumper David Fajoyomi become Fordham's first NCAA Championship participant since 2009, where he earned Second Team All-America honors after tying for 15th overall. It was the last award of many for Fajoyomi, as he was the Atlantic 10 champion in the high jump for both the indoor and outdoor seasons, while breaking school records for the indoor high jump and indoor 200 meter dash. A total of seven school records fell during the 2013-14 campaign, three of which were taken down by Titi Fagade in the 200, 500, and 800 meter indoor events.
Previously, Dewey saw the continued success of his squads as the men’s outdoor team captured the 2013 Metropolitan Championship, the Rams’ the third Met title over the past six years.
During indoors for the men in 2013-14, the 4x400 relay team of Sean Atkinson, Sean Collins, Ian Williams, and Lester Taylor earned First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors with a win at the conference championships while Atkinson (500m), Sam Houston (heptathlon), David Fajoyomi (high jump) and the men's 4x800 relay also earned Second Team All-Conference honors. Fajoyomi went on to earn Second Team All-East honors with a second place showing at the IC4A Championship, an event where the Rams also snapped the school 4x400 relay record, the oldest standing track record at Rose Hill.
On the women’s side last winter, Titi Fagade was named Second Team All-Atlantic 10 in the 800m. She then went on to receive Second Team All-East honors by taking second overall in the 500m at the ECAC Championships. Also at the ECACs, the women’s 4x800 relay of Fagade,  Melissa Higgins, Mara Lieberman, and Kristen Stuart broke the school record by over six seconds and earned Second Team All-East honors.
Nationally Fordham had some of the top times in four different events with Atkinson (500m) ranking tenth, Fagade rated sixth (500m), the women's 4x800 relay ranking sixth and the men's 4x800 relay team turning in the fourth fastest time.
Outdoors last spring, Kevin Fitzgerald won the 1,500m at the Atlantic 10 Championships while Fajoyomi continued his indoor success with a Second Team All-Conference showing in the high jump. Atkinson (400m hurdles) and the 4x800 relay also earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors.
For the women/ the 4x800 relay placed second at the ECAC Championships to earn Second Team All-East accolades.
Fajoyomi wrapped up the season by representing Fordham at the 2013 NCAA East Regionals in the high jump.
In the classroom, Fordham was one of 106 schools nationally to have both its men's and women's team honored by the USTFCCCA as a 2013 Division I All-Academic Track & Field team while Fitzgerald and Collins earned Academic All-Atlantic 10 honors.
In 2011-12, Dewey saw his athletes gain recognition in cross country as well as in both indoor and outdoor track. In the fall, Julian Saad won both the IC4A and Metropolitan championship, becoming the first Fordham cross country runner to win both races. He also placed fourth at the Atlantic 10 Championship, the best ever showing for a Fordham male at the A-10’s, to earn All-Conference accolades.
Indoors in 2011-12, the Rams capped the season at the ECAC/IC4A Championship where the Rams had three second place finishes as David Fajoyomi and Kevin Fitzgerald placed second in the high jump and mile, respectively, and the 4x800 relay also took second, to earn Second Team All-East honors. At the Atlantic 10 Championships, Fordham's men's team tied its best-ever finish with a third place showing while the women's team took ninth. Leading the way for the men were Fitzgerald (1000m), Fajoyomi (high jump) and the 4x800 relay, who all won their events (the 4x800 relay won for the fourth straight year), while Sean Atkinson (500m) and Saad (3000m) each took second to earn Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors.
The 2012 Fordham outdoor season was highlighted by Sean Collins (400m hurdles), Blair Hassell (javelin), and Fajoyomi (high jump) qualifying for the NCAA East Regionals. Earlier in the spring, the Rams had a quality showing at the ECAC/IC4A Championships where the men’s 4x800 relay took home the gold. At the Atlantic 10 Championship, Fitzgerald (1500m) and Sam Houston (decathlon) won events while Atkinson (400m hurdles), Fajoyomi (high jump), the men’s 4x800 relay and Hassel (javelin) all earned Second Team All-Conference accolades.
In 2010-11, the season opened with Michael Belgiovine earning the Atlantic 10 Newcomer of the Year Award as the league’s top rookie finisher. Indoors, the Rams received All-East performances from senior Kerri Gallagher in the 800m and the men’s 4x800 relay as both took second place at the ECAC/IC4A Championships, the men’s relay in school-record setting fashion.
At the 2011 Atlantic 10 Indoor Championship, the men's team managed a third place finish by one point over Massachusetts and Temple, tying the team's best ever finish, led by Brian Schmidt who defended his A-10 title in the 800 meters. He was joined in the winners circle by Kevin Fitzgerald, who won the 1,000 meters and the 4x800 relay. On the women’s side, Gallagher stole the show pulling off two event wins in Atlantic 10 record times. She won the mile run in an Atlantic 10 record time of 4:48.60, breaking the old mark of 4:49.71 by La Salle's Toniann Razzi in 2000, and the 1,000 meter run in a conference record time of 2:51.43, breaking the 2006 record of 2:52.79, held by La Salle's Elizabeth Geiger.
Outdoors in 2011, the Rams set five school records at the Atlantic 10 Championships with Schmidt (800m), Danny Atkinson (400m hurdles) and the 4x800 relay earning Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors for the men while Gallagher did the same for the women (1500m) while the 4x800 relay went on to earn All-East honors at the IC4A Championships.
Following the outdoor season, two Rams wrapped up competition on the national stage as Sam Houston placed tenth in the decathlon and Anisa Arsenault finished eleventh in the 5000m at the 2011 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field.
In 2009-10, the year started off with senior Brigid Moriarty becoming just the second women’s cross country runner in school history to earn All-Atlantic 10 honors while off the course, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) awarded the Fordham University men’s and women’s teams All-Academic Team honors for the 2009 season. Moriarty and graduate student Clifton Hilario led the way in the classroom as each were named to the 2009 Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team.
The 2009-10 indoors season was capped by Kevin Fitzgerald and Gallagher's performances at the ECAC/IC4A Championships where Fitzgerald won the IC4A 1000 meter title while Gallagher took second in the ECAC 1000m. For their accomplishments, both runners were named All-East. At the Atlantic 10 Championships, Brian Schmidt won the 800 meters in an Atlantic 10 record time (1:52.86) while Gallagher won one event and took second in another to earn two All-Conference accolades. This was the first time that Fordham has had multiple running event victories at the Atlantic 10 Championship, since joining the league in 1996. In addition to the individual accolades, the men’s 4x400 relay earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10.
At the 2010 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships, Moriarty won the 10,000 meters while Gallagher won the 800 meter run in an Atlantic 10 record time of 2:09.08 as both earned First Team All-Conference honors while Schmidt, who took second in the 800 meters, earned Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors. Academically outdoors, Moriarty, Gallagher and senior John Korevec were recognized for their athletic and academic accomplishments by being named to the 2010 Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference Team.
In 2008-09, the Fordham men successfully defended their outdoor Metropolitan crown while the women took second for the second consecutive season. The Rams also had three Atlantic 10 individual champions, two individual and two relays that earned Second Team All-Conference honors. The season was highlighted by Matt DiBuono, who was named Athlete of the Meet at the Outdoor Metropolitan Championships for the second straight year. He also won both the weight throw and hammer competitions at the Atlantic 10 Championships and advanced to the NCAA National Championships in the hammer throw where he placed 14th. On the year, eight school records fell while academically, two student-athletes were named Academic All-Atlantic 10, including senior Clifton Hilario who was named Academic All-Conference for cross country, indoor track and outdoor track as well as being named First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District.
In 2007-08, Dewey led the men's outdoor squad to their first ever Metropolitan Championship while the women's squad took second; their best ever finish at the outdoor Mets. Additionally, the men's indoor 4x800 relay successfully defended its Atlantic 10 title. DiBuono, who was named Athlete of the Meet at the Outdoor Metropolitan Championships, defended his Atlantic 10 hammer throw crown while also earning Second Team All-Conference honors in the weight throw. Two other Rams earned All-Conference honors during the indoor season while two school records fell on the year.
In 2006-07, the Rams had five athletes earn All-Atlantic 10 honors during the indoor season, including Kerstin Greene, who was named the Atlantic 10 Indoor Field Performer of the Year as well as earning All-America honors in the heptathlon, and DiBuono, who was named the Atlantic 10 Indoor Rookie of the Meet. In the outdoor season the Rams earned All-Conference honors in five events and one relay with Greene being named the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Field Performer of the Year and winning both the heptathlon and long jump titles. Fordham athletes also set eight school indoor records and five outdoor records while both the men's and women's teams finished third at the 2006 Outdoor Metropolitan Championships.
The 2004-05 season was one of the most successful seasons under Dewey's direction with the men's indoor squad taking third at the Atlantic 10 Championships, Fordham's best ever showing at the conference meet, earning Dewey the 2004-05 Atlantic 10 Men's Indoor Track and Field Coach of the Year honors. The Fordham men also took fourth of nine teams at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships. Sophomore Aaron DeGraffe led the charge for Dewey's men, setting the Fordham indoor triple jump record while garnering First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in the event for both the indoor and outdoor season.
On the women's side in 2004-05, no fewer than eight school records were set during the indoor and outdoor season. Kerstin Greene led the assault on the record book, setting six records as well as earning First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in the high jump for both the indoor and outdoor season.
In 2003-04, the Fordham women set three school records while the men had a First Team All-Atlantic 10 Performer and the women a Second Team All-Conference athlete. Additionally, the men's outdoor 4x400 relay team earned Second Team honors.
In 2003, Dewey had two men advance to the NCAA East Regionals at George Mason University with Deric Zaphire just missing out qualifying for the finals in the 400 IH. The 2002-03 Rams also were a record-setting bunch, breaking four indoor records and two outdoor records.
In 2002, under Dewey's tutelage, the men and women's outdoor teams took second at the Metropolitan Championships, the highest combined performance in school history at the time.
Under Dewey's watchful eye over the past 38 years, the Fordham men's program also achieved its first indoor and outdoor track championship in five decades. The Rams have also won two IC4A University Division Cross Country Championships as well as three Metropolitan Outdoor titles. The women's program has claimed several titles as well, including the New York State Division I Cross Country Championship, the New York Downstate Cross Country title, and the College Track Conference Cross Country Championship. In 1995-96, the Lady Rams captured their third consecutive ECAC University Division title.
On the men's side, 37 current school records have been set during Dewey's tenure, while the women's squad has set 60 records.
In the spring of 2002, Dewey received the Hughes Award from Fordham University in recognition of his 20+ years of service to the university.
Dewey is in his 53rd season of coaching. Before arriving at Fordham, he worked at St. Augustine, Nazareth, and Bishop Ford High Schools in the CHSAA. He has been honored as Fordham's "Coach of the Year" in 1983 and in 1995.
