Peter Larson begins his second season on the Fordham baseball staff in 2019.
“I am excited and confident about what Pete will bring to our program and our pitching staff. He has a solid track record of identifying, recruiting, and developing pitchers. I know our pitchers will benefit from his guidance and I look forward to working with him,” said Fordham head baseball coach Kevin Leighton.
Fordham continued to see new marks hit in 2018. The team finished with 35 wins, the most for the program since the 2007 season, and tied for second in the Atlantic 10 standings. The Rams also set a number of records throughout the year, which included team records for stolen bases, leading the NCAA with 169, strikeouts, surpassing the old mark by over 100 with 536, and saves (20) in 2018. Other team records set were runs in a single game (29 vs. Saint Peter's) and strikeouts in a game (21 vs. Hofstra).
The Rams were also honored with a number of awards throughout 2018, led by Jake MacKenzie, who was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, a
Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American, First Team All-Atlantic 10, and First Team All-ECAC. MacKenzie also joined Ben Greenberg on the ABCA/Rawlings All-Northeast Region Second Team, while also being one of three Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team selection with fellow freshman Joseph Quintal and C.J. Vazquez. Billy Godrick also added to the awards list earning Academic All-Atlantic 10 honors. Fordham also had another player drafted in the 2018 MLB Draft, as Reiss Knehr was taken in the 20th round by the San Diego Padres after ranking in the top ten in career ERA and strikeouts at Fordham.
Larson joined the Fordham staff after spending 2017 at Albany as their pitching coach. The Great Danes went 26-26 on the year, winning two games at the America East Tournament and had seven players earn postseason honors, including relief pitcher Dominic Savino (First Team) and starting pitcher Jack McClure (Second Team).
Before Albany, Larson spent the 2016 season as an assistant coach at Siena College, helping the Saints to a second place regular season finish with a 16-8 record and a runner-up finish in the MAAC conference tournament. Under Larson's watch, Siena had a pitcher earn second-team All-MAAC honors, a MAAC Rookie of the Week pitcher, and two hurlers named to the All-MAAC Tournament Team.
Prior to Siena, Larson was an assistant on the King University (Tenn.) baseball staff. He contributed in all aspects of the program, primarily working with outfielders, high school recruiting and serving as base coach during games. The Tornado finished third in the Conference Carolinas in 2015 (16-10) and posted an overall record of 24-26.
In the summer of 2015, Larson served as the pitching coach for the Madison Mallards in the Northwoods League. Under his direction, the Mallards staff led the league in strikeouts with 580 and finished fourth in team ERA at 3.73, closing the summer with a record of 43-28.
Larson began his coaching career as a pitching coach at Jamestown High School in Williamsburg, Va. for two seasons, and then spent a year at the Collegiate School in Richmond. He helped lead both teams to state tournament appearances while lowering the pitching staffs’ ERA from the previous years. At the same time, he worked as a baseball instructor at Rock-It Sports, Richmond Baseball Academy-West, and Colonial Baseball Instruction.
Larson graduated from Ferrum College in 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. While at Ferrum, Larson was a four-year member of the Panther baseball team and helped his squad to USA South conference titles in 2005 and 2007, as well as South Regional appearances in both years. As a senior reliever in 2009, Larson led the pitching staff in ERA. After graduation, Larson went on to play professionally in the Can-Am League and North American League in 2011.
