Lindsey Scherf, a six-time All-American runner, was named an assistant track and field/cross country coach at Fordham in September of 2019.
“To be able to add someone with the experience of Lindsey Scherf to the Fordham staff is tremendous,” said Horowitz. “Lindsey had a great collegiate career at Harvard and Oregon. Her prior coaching experiences and professional level racing provides our program with a wealth of knowledge. We are looking forward to the impact she will have with our student-athletes.”
Scherf currently runs for the Westchester Track Club, specializing in road racing (5k-marathons). She broke the women’s indoor marathon record in 2018 at the Armory NYC Indoor Marathon World Record Challenge with a 2:40:55.3 clocking, bettering both the former women’s world record of 2:42.30 and the women’s indoor marathon mark of 2:44.11.
An experienced marathoner, Scherf placed second at the 2016 Honolulu Marathon, finishing second to Boston Marathon champion Bizunesh, the highest finish by an American in the race since 1988. She also placed second overall in the 2016 USA Road Racing Circuit and was the 2015 USA 25K champion.
Since April of 2019, Scherf has served as the assistant varsity boys and girls outdoor track and field coach at Harrison High School, specializing in coaching the distance and middle distance events. She was also the head girl’s varsity coach at Riverdale Country School in 2015.
On the collegiate level, Scherf served as the head men’s and women’s cross country coach at Sarah Lawrence College in 2011 and as a volunteer assistant coach at Duke University in 2012-2013.
As a collegiate competitor, Scherf earned All-American honors at Harvard and in 2004-2005 was one of only two collegiate freshmen runners to earn All-America honors in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.
As a sophomore, Scherf placed sixth at the 2005 U.S. Cross Country Championships to earn a spot on the U.S. Junior Cross Country Team. She also finished 18th at the 2005 IAAF World Cross Country Junior Championships in France, which was the second-best finish by an American woman under-20 since 1992.
In 2007, Scherf was Harvard’s top finisher to lead the Crimson to victory over Yale for the first time this decade in their annual cross country dual. She placed ninth in the 3,000 meters at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships, where she won her fourth career All-America award. That year also saw her run the fourth-fastest U.S. junior time in the 5,000 meters, 15:42.81.
Following graduation from Harvard, Scherf competed as a graduate student at the University of Oregon, helping the Ducks to runner-up finishes at the Pac-10 and NCAA Cross Country championships.
A 2008 graduate of Harvard with a degree in Psychology, Scherf went on to receive a master’s degree in Kinesiology from the University of Michigan in 2010.
