A 2012 Fordham graduate, Andrew O’Connell returned to his alma mater in November of 2022.

O’Connell came back to the Bronx following eight years at St. John’s, where he began as an assistant director of athletic communications in 2014 before eventually rising to the role of director of athletic communications.  He spent his last six years in Queens as the primary contact for the historically successful men’s soccer and baseball programs while also serving as the secondary communications contact for the Red Storm men’s basketball team. O’Connell’s first two years at St. John’s were spent working with the women’s basketball and women’s soccer squads, both of whom appeared in the NCAA Tournament during his tenure.

This marks O’Connell’s second stint at Rose Hill, having spent two years as an assistant sports information director from 2012-14.  During that span, he worked with the women’s basketball and softball programs, who combined to win three Atlantic 10 titles.

In addition to his role at the University, O'Connell also serves as a part-time member of the game night staff for the Madison Square Garden Sports Properties Division, for which he has worked several NITs, BIG EAST Tournaments, NCAA Regional Finals and championship boxing events.

A native of Elmont, N.Y., O'Connell graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in American Studies.

O'Connell has deep New York basketball roots in his family. His father, the late Jim O'Connell (known to many simply as "Oc"), worked at The Associated Press for 40 years, most of which were spent as the organization's lead college basketball writer.  The 2002 winner of the Curt Gowdy Award from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, O'Connell was also inducted in the United States Basketball Writers Hall of Fame.  His mother, the former Anne Gregory, scored 2,548 points and grabbed 1,999 boards during her four-year playing career at Fordham, where she was the first female inductee into the school's athletic hall of fame and still holds the crown as the school's career leader in scoring and rebounding.

O'Connell resides in Smithtown, N.Y., with his wife, Laura (Greene), who was an All-CAA soccer player at Hofstra.  The couple has two children, Olivia and Thomas.
