Mike Massone begins his second season with Fordham track & field after nine seasons as the head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country and track & field programs at Saint Peter's University.
During the 2016-17 season, junior Nicholas Regan placed sixth in the javelin at the outdoor Atlantic 10 Championship and Andrew Byrne scored in the high jump, placing seventh overall. On the women's side, Gabriella Gavalas finished fifth in the triple jump at the outdoor Metropolitan Championship, while Kylie Farrell took third in the pentathlon.
Prior to joining the staff at Fordham Massone helped bring Saint Peter's to the top of the MAAC on the women's side, where the team swept the indoor and outdoor championships in 2011-12, to become just the second MAAC team to ever repeat as both indoor and outdoor champions after capturing the two titles in 2010-11 as well. The men finished in third place and had six individual champions in both the Indoor and outdoor seasons for 2011-12.
Massone was named the MAAC Women’s Coach of the Year award for each season, and won five such awards: four on the women’s side and one on the men’s side.
During the 2012 outdoor season, Saint Peter’s had their first ever NCAA finalist, as Isaiah Harris qualified for the NCAA Championships in Des Moines, Iowa. The Peacocks also had three qualifiers for the NCAA Preliminaries in Jacksonville.
Massone’s coaching career began in 1978 as the Head Field Events Coach at Christ the King High School. As a collegian, he competed as a sprinter, and decathlete at St. Francis College. He is a former New York State Powerlifting Champion at both 181 and 198 lbs, and in 1985, held the ADFPA record in the squat with a 711 lb lift.
The former Physical Education teacher is also a member of the National Throws Coaches Association.
