Fordham Men’s Basketball Head Coach Mike Magpayo announced the addition of Ryan Hyland, a longtime head coach in the metropolitan collegiate ranks, to his staff as an assistant coach in May of 2025.
“Bringing a local head coach who had success at the college level in New York is invaluable to our program,” said Magpayo. “Coach Hyland and I have traded notes on coaching for over a decade and I’m excited to add an up-and-coming young head coach, but more importantly, a great role model to our student-athletes as a great husband and father, to our staff.”
Hyland comes to the Bronx after eleven years as the head coach at Division III John Jay, where he led the Bloodhounds to multiple CUNYAC titles.
This past season, Hyland became just the second head coach in program history to lead John Jay to the NCAA Tournament after winning the CUNYAC Tournament title with a victory over top-seeded Baruch. The Bloodhounds finished the season with a record of 19-9, including an 11-3 record in league action.
In 2019-20, Hyland led John Jay to its best effort in the CUNYAC since 1984-85, going 13-1 in the league to win the regular season title. Hyland and his staff were named the CUNYAC Coaching Staff of the Year, the first such accolade for the program in 17 seasons.
In 2020, Hyland was also named to the NABC/Under Armour 30-Under-30 Team, which honored 30 of the top college basketball coaches in the country under the age of 30.
Under Hyland, 12 different Bloodhounds earned All-CUNYAC honors, including 2020 CUNYAC Player of the Year Doug Levy. Levy graduated as the only player in John Jay history to record 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds. The prior season, Essien Epps graduated as the program’s all-time leading scorer.
Hyland began his coaching career at his alma mater, The Catholic University of America, where he was an assistant from 2011-14. During his three years on staff, CUA went 58-25, including a 25-4 mark during the 2012-13 campaign that featured a second round appearance in the NCAA Tournament and saw the Cardinals rise as high as no. 6 in the country.
A native of Breezy Point, Hyland attended Brooklyn’s Poly Prep. He and his wife, Caroline, have two children, Olive and Finnegan, and currently reside in Park Slope.
