Matt Hurwitz

Matt Hurwitz, a three-year assistant at UC Riverside, will be joined Mike Magpayo's inaugural coaching staff in the Bronx in May of 2025.

"Matt is unique in that he is a hustler and a worker, as well as an innovative basketball mind," said Magpayo. "Matt is the central nervous system behind our operations and brings a results-oriented mindset to our coaching staff."

This past season marked Hurwitz's third at UC Riverside, as he guided the Highlanders to a 21-13 record and the program's first-ever appearance in the NIT.  Over his three years at UCR, Hurwitz helped the Highlanders record a pair of 20-win seasons and go 38-22 in Big West play.

Prior to arriving at Riverside, Hurwitz spent one season as a graduate manager at Santa Clara.  With Hurwitz on staff in 2021-22, the Broncos went 21-12 and earned a bid to the NIT after losing by just three points to Saint Mary's in the semifinals of the WCC Tournament.

Before his stint at Santa Clara, Hurwitz was an assistant coach at the Windward School in Los Angeles, where he mentored a pair of Pac-12 signees.

Hurwitz graduated from UCLA in 2020 with a degree in sociology.  While in Westwood, the North Hollywood native was a head manager and video assistant under three head coaches: Steve Alford, Murry Bartow and Mick Cronin.

From 2016-18, Hurwitz was an assistant athletic director as well as assistant coach and JV head coach at Shalhevet High School in Los Angeles. Hurwitz helped manage the entire athletic department while leading his team to the 2017 CIF-SS Division 4A championship game and the 2018 Red Sarachek Tournament National Championship.
