Tim Cary begins the eighth year of his second stint at Fordham in 2016 where he will again be in charge of the defensive backs as well as serving as co-defensive coordinator for the third straight year. He previously was the Rams’ defensive backs coach in the fall of 2006 and the outside linebackers coach in the spring of 2007 before spending three years at the University of Connecticut.

Last fall, Cary co-coordinated a defense that led the Patriot League and was tenth in the NCAA FCS in turnovers gained (29) and fumbles recovered (13) while also leading the league and ranking 17th in the nation in passes intercepted (16). Individually the Rams had four players named All-Patriot League with Stephen Hodge (LB) and Jihaad Pretlow (DB) earning first team honors and JQ Bowers (DB) and Niko Thorpe (LB) being placed on the second team. Additionally, Hodge was named a consensus All-American.

In 2014, Cary served as co-defensive coordinator for a defense that had seven players earn All-Patriot League honors, including defensive backs Jordan Chapman, Ian Williams and Jake Dixon. The defensive backfield helped the Rams lead the Patriot League and ranked ninth in the NCAA FCS in passing yards allowed (164.2) while also ranking third in the league, and 33rd in the NCAA FCS, in passes intercepted. Overall, the 2014 Fordham defense led the league and ranked 14th in the nation in red zone defense (.714) and also led the conference, and was 28th in the NCAA FCS, in fumbles recovered (11).

In 2013, the Fordham defensive backfield was a main reason behind the Rams leading the NCAA FCS in turnovers gained as the unit accounted for 21 interceptions, third best in the NCAA FCS and tops in the Patriot League. Fordham also led the Patriot League and was 21st in the nation in defensive passing efficiency. Three Ram defensive backs were named All-Patriot League with Ian Williams, who led the league in passes defended, being placed on the First Team and Jordan Chapman and Levon Williams being named to the Second Team.

9019In 2012, the Fordham defense picked off 12 passes, fourth best in the Patriot League, led by Ian Williams, who intercepted five passes and broke up six, both second best in the conference. Williams earned Second Team All-Patriot League honors for his exploits.

In 2011 under Cary’s tutelage, Williams ranked fourth in the Patriot League in passes defended, averaging 1.00/game and he was fourth on the team in total tackles with 54 while fellow defensive back Brendan Melanophy was fifth with 53 total stops.

In 2010, Cary helped bring in the first scholarship recruiting class for the Rams since the 1954 season while also guiding the defensive backs, including current Detroit Lion Isa Abdul-Quddus, who led the team and was eleventh in the Patriot League with 78 tackles, Jamal Haruna, who was second on the squad with 74 stops, and Ahmed Haruna, who ranked fifth in the Patriot League with eight pass deflections.

For the previous three years, Cary served as a graduate assistant at the University of Connecticut. In this role, he assisted in coaching the defensive backs, including three NFL draft picks: Darius Butler (New England Patriots), Tyvon Branch (Oakland Raiders) and Robert McClain (Carolina Panthers) along with Dahna Deleston, a free agent signee with the Chicago Bears.
During Cary’s time in Storrs, the Huskies appeared in the PapaJohns.com Bowl (2009), the International Bowl (2009 - following the 2008 season) and the Meineke Car Care Bowl (2007), winning both the PapaJohns.com and International Bowls.

In 2006, Cary directed Fordham’s offensive scout team while assisting with coaching the defensive backs, recruited Nassau County and parts of California, and also served as the team’s video coordinator.

Prior to his first stay at Fordham, Cary was also a member of former Fordham head coach Tom Masella’s staff at Central Connecticut, serving as the defensive graduate assistant coach in 2005, his first coaching position.

A 2005 graduate of Fairfield University, Cary earned a Bachelor’s degree in economics. He was a member of the Stags football program for two seasons before the school discontinued the sport. He also received a Master’s degree in sports administration from UConn.

Cary and his wife, Brianne, have two children: a son, Jackson, and a daughter, Emma.
