All-Patriot League Performers Under McCarty

Peter McCarty, who has more than 30 years of coaching experience, starts his third season as a member of the Rams' staff in 2014 after two years as the defensive line coach at Cornell University. He will be tasked with guiding the Fordham defensive line again this fall.
 
Last fall the defensive line was a main factor in the Rams’ defensive improvement as Fordham led the Patriot League in fumbles recovered, ranking second in the NCA FCS, and led the league  in defensive passing efficiency and ranked second in scoring defense and third in total defense.
 
Two Fordham defensive linemen received All-Patriot League honors in 2013 with Brett Biestek and DeAndre Slate both being placed on the first team.

In 2012, the Fordham defense recorded 23 sacks and 55 tackles for loss, with Nick Womack earning Second Team All-Patriot League honors.

McCarty's extensive coaching experience at the college level includes stops at Stanford, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Illinois, Syracuse, Central Florida, Holy Cross and Western Michigan.

Before Fordham, McCarty was an assistant coach at Cornell University for two seasons, where he led the Big Red's defensive line. Last year, Cornell finished with a 5-5 mark, with one defensive lineman earning Second Team All-Ivy League honors and another Honorable Mention accolades.

Prior to his stay in Ithaca, McCarty served for three years as the defensive line coach at Western Michigan University. Under McCarty's tutelage, the Bronco defensive line ranked second in the Mid-American Conference in sacks in 2007 and 2008, third in tackles for loss and rush defense in 2008 and fourth in total defense and tackles for loss in 2007. Defensive end Zach Davidson earned Second Team Defense All-MAC honors in 2007 and 2008, compiling 10.0 sacks and 22.0 tackles for loss during that span.

From 2004-06, McCarty was the defensive line coach at the University of Central Florida under head coach George O'Leary. In his first season at UCF, McCarty developed a pair of true freshmen defensive tackles into starters in Keith Shologan and Emeka Okammor. In 2005, Shologan was one of UCF's most reliable players and totaled 29 tackles on the year.

McCarty was an assistant coach for two years at Stanford (2002-03) before moving on to Central Florida and was the defensive tackles coach in 2001 at Georgia Tech under O'Leary. The Yellow Jackets went 8-5 that year, finishing the season ranked 24th, and defeated #11 Stanford in the Seattle Bowl.

Before his season at Georgia Tech, McCarty spent four seasons (1997-2000) as the defensive tackles coach at Illinois under Ron Turner. During his tenure, he helped the Fighting Illini to a victory in the 1999 Micronpc.com Bowl. That was the first of three bowl trips McCarty has made with different schools followed by the 2005 Hawaii Bowl team with UCF and the 2001 Seattle Bowl with Georgia Tech.

Prior to his stint at Illinois, McCarty was the defensive ends and linebackers coach at Maryland for five years (1992-96) under head coach Mark Duffner. He also worked for Duffner as the outside linebackers coach at Holy Cross for five seasons (1986-90).

McCarty spent the 1991 campaign as an intern for the New England Patriots. From 1982-85, McCarty was the defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach at American International in Springfield, Mass. McCarty began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Bangor High School in Maine. From there, he moved on to become the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Maine Central Institute.

A 1978 graduate of the University of Massachusetts with a degree in education, McCarty was an all-conference linebacker for the Minutemen in 1977. He also earned a master's degree in physical education from Syracuse in 1982.

A native of Bangor, Maine, McCarty has two sons, Cullen and Jackson.
