Joe Conlin, who served as associate head coach/offensive coordinator at Yale for four years, was named head football coach at Fordham University on December 22, 2017.
In 2023, the Fordham offense fired on all cylinders, led by the passing game which led the Patriot League and ranked 12th in the NCAA FCS in passing yards/game (275.6) and was second in the League and 13th in the nation in total offense (428.0 yards/game). Fordham also finished second in the Patriot League and 27th in the NCAA in scoring (30.5 points/game).
The 2023 Fordham offense was led by quarterback CJ Montes, a Second Team All-Patriot League selection, who completed 241 of 376 passes for 3,000 yards with 26 touchdowns and just one interception. Montes led the Patriot League in passing yards/game (272.7), passing yards, and passing touchdowns, ranking eighth in the NCAA FCS in passing touchdowns and ninth in passing yards/game.
Joining Montes in receiving All-Patriot League honors on offense were running back Julius Loughridge, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards in 2023, wide receiver M.J. Wright, who graduated sixth on the Fordham career lists for receptions and receiving yards, offensive lineman Lucas Portes, and placekicker Brandon Peskin.
Defensively, linebacker James Conway, who was second in the Patriot League in total tackles/game, and defensive back Nahil Perkins, who led the League and was fourth in the NCAA in passes defended, earned First Team All-League accolades as the Fordham defense ranked second in the conference in scoring defense and rushing defense.
In 2022, Conlin led the Rams to one of their most successful seasons to date, led by a record-setting offense. Quarterback Tim DeMorat, who was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year for the third straight year and finished as runner-up in the Walter Payton Award, set school single season records with 4,891 passing yards and 56 touchdowns (also a Patriot League record). He led the NCAA FCS in passing yards, passing yards/game (414.6), and total offense (411.6 yards/game) and was second in passing touchdowns (56) and passing efficiency (180.7) and led the Patriot League in passing yards, passing yards/game, passing touchdowns, and total offense, and passing efficiency. DeMorat set the school and Patriot League records for most passing touchdowns in a season (56) and career (123) and most passing yards in a season (4,891) and also set school and Patriot League career records for completions (1,032) and passing yards (13,454).
As a team, the 2023 Fordham offense led the NCAA FCS in passing offense (413.8 yards/game) and total offense (608.9 yards/game) while ranking second NCAA FCS in scoring (49.5 points/game). The Rams led the PL and ranked third in the NCAA FCS in first downs (357). The Fordham offensive line led the League in fewest sacks allowed (1.67/game) and helped the Rams rank second in the Patriot League in rushing (195.2 yards/game).
The Rams went 9-3 overall in 2022, 5-1 in the Patriot League, and received an at-large bid to the NCAA FCS Championship, Fordham fifth appearance at the championship.
In the 2021 season, the Rams went 6-5 overall, 4-2 in the Patriot League, and continued their offensive success. Fordham led the League and ranked eleventh in the NCAA FCS in passing offense (296.7 yards/game) and lead the League and ranked 12th in the NCAA FCS in total offense (447.5 yards/game). The Rams also were second in the PL and 18th in the NCAA FCS in scoring offense (33.6 points/game) while leading the League and ranking 22nd in the NCAA in fewest sacks allowed (1.36/game) and leading the League and ranking ninth in the NCAA in TFLs allowed/game (3.91/game).
Leading the 2021 Fordham offense was lineman Nick Zakelj, who received consensus All-America honors and was drafted in the fifth round by the San Francisco 49ers, and quarterback Tim DeMorat, who was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season.
For the spring 2020-2021 season, the Fordham offense was tops in the Patriot League and 17th in the NCAA FCS in scoring, averaging 31.7 points/game. The 2020-2021 Fordham offense also led the League and was 14th in the NCAA FCS in total offense (433.3 yards/game) and led the League and was sixth in the NCAA FCS in passing offense (349.7 yards/game). Junior quarterback Tim DeMorat earned Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year honors, and he was joined by five other Rams in earning First Team All-League accolades.
Defensively in 2020-2021, the Rams were paced by Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year junior linebacker Ryan Greenhagen, one of three first team All-League selections for Fordham. The Rams led the Patriot League in fumbles recovered, passes intercepted, passing yards allowed, and red zone defense.
In 2019, Conlin's offense led the Patriot League in passing yards/game (357.2 yards/game) and scoring (25.0). He saw sophomore quarterback Tim DeMorat, who led the conference in passing yards, passing yards/game, and passing touchdowns, earn First Team All-Patriot League honors while junior running back Zach Davis, who led the league in rushing, and junior offensive lineman Nick Zakelj also earned first team honors.

In his first season on Rose Hill, Conlin's offense was tops in the Patriot League in passing offense, averaging 200.7 passing yards/game, and he saw seven players earn All-Patriot League honors.
Conlin, who spent six seasons at Yale, was named the Joel E. Smilow '54 Offensive Coordinator at the school in 2014.
In 2017, Yale ended a 37-year drought when it beat Harvard 24-3 in the 134th edition of The Game to win the Ivy League Title. Yale improved from 3-7 in '16 to 9-1 in '17 and its offense improved in nearly every key statistical category under Conlin's leadership.
In 2017, the Yale offense ranked 12th in the NCAA FCS in total offense (450.7 yards/game) and 13th in passing efficiency (152.41) while also ranking in the top 22 in the NCAA FCS in red zone offense (14th), rushing offense (14th), scoring offense (14th) and fewest sacks allowed (22nd).
Conlin arrived at Yale as the offensive line coach in 2013 before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2014. His 2014 season was a great start as the Yale offensive coordinator. The Bulldogs, who went 8-2, led the NCAA FCS in total offense (ranking third among all NCAA schools), while running back Tyler Varga (points per game) and wide receiver Grant Wallace (yards per game) led the FCS in offensive categories. In addition, his quarterback, Morgan Roberts, was tops in the Ivy in almost every statistic before finishing his career in 2015 as one of Yale's all-time best.
Conlin, who also served as the offensive line coach, did great things with the guys up front. The stats tell most of the story, but there are other accomplishments. His 2013 (and 2014) starting five began every game, the only Ivy League school to accomplish that, while three of the five earned All-Ivy League honors. His latest honoree was Luke Longinotti, a first-team All-Ivy center.

Conlin arrived in New Haven after spending the 2011 season as the offensive line coach at Harvard, helping the Crimson win an Ivy League title while setting a school scoring record.
Most of Conlin's coaching experience was at FCS power New Hampshire, where he helped the Wildcats to seven straight NCAA playoff appearances from 2004 to 2010. During his tenure at UNH, Conlin served as the offensive line coach in 2009 and 2010 but also worked with the defensive line, safeties and special teams for a program that went 65-25 and won one conference championship.
Conlin, a three-year starter at defensive tackle at the University of Pittsburgh, coached the defensive line at West Virginia Tech in 2003, a year after graduating. His Pittsburgh head coach, Walt Harris, selected him as a game captain four times. Conlin earned a degree in administration of justice in 2002.
He also gained coaching experience at Greensburg Central Catholic High School from 2002-03, where he worked with the tight ends and defensive ends while also handling strength and conditioning.
Conlin, his wife Karen, and daughters Hannah, Katie, and Emily, currently reside in Southington, Conn.
