James Lenahan begins his eighthyear on the Fordham staff in 2024. After serving on the defensive side of the ball his first two years, he moved over to the offensive side in 2020, coaching the Rams' running backs. In 2021 he moved back to the defense, overseeing the Fordham cornerbacks for two years before moving to the safeties for 2024.

Last fall, Fordham ranked second in the Patriot League and was tied for tenth in the country with three defensive touchdowns and was second in the league on both first downs defense and red zone defense.

In 2023, the Fordham defense ranked second in the Patriot League in scoring defense and rushing defense. Cornerback Nahil Perkins, a First Team All-Patriot League pick, was instrumental with the Rams' defense, leading the League and ranking fourth in the NCAA FCS in passes defended (1.5/game).

On special teams, the Rams led the Patriot League in net punting (37.7) and blocked punts (3) and second in punt return defense (5.14). The Fordham placekicking chores were handled by Brandon Peskin, a First Team All-Patriot League selection, who led the Patriot League and was 15th in the NCAA FCS infield goals/game (1.27) and field goal percentage (0.824).

In 2023, the Fordham corners helped the Rams ranked third in the Patriot League with 12 interceptions, led by three from Stephen Williams II, a Second Team All-Patriot League pick, and two from freshman Alex Kemper.

The 2022 Fordham special teams also enjoyed a solid season, leading the Patriot League and ranking fifth in the NCAA FCS in net punting (40.20) while also third in the league in punt return defense. Placekicker Brandon Peskin, a Second Team All-Patriot League selection, set a school record with 76 PATs and he ranked second in the Patriot League in field goals/game (0.7).

In 2021, the Fordham cornerbacks helped the Rams rank third in the Patriot League in interceptions with seven.
 
In 2020-2021, the Fordham running backs helped the Rams lead the Patriot League and rank 17th in the NCAA FCS in scoring, averaging 31.7 points/game. The 2020-2021 Fordham offense also led the League and was 14th in the NCAA FCS in total offense (433.3 yards/game) while senior running back Trey Sneed earned First Team All-Patriot League honors.

Lenahan joined the Fordham football staff in March of 2018 first coaching the inside linebackers in 2018, and then guiding the safeties in 2019.

In 2019, the Fordham defense ranked third in the Patriot League in interceptions, with senior free safety James Bigg-Frazier leading the way with two.

In 2018, Lenahan's linebackers helped the Rams led the Patriot League and rank 20th in the NCAA FCS in tackles for loss with 7.5/game. He also saw one of his student-athletes, Glenn Cunningham, earn First Team All-Patriot League accolades after setting a school record with 21.5 tackles for loss.

Lenahan arrived at Fordham after serving as the Defensive Assistant/Assistant Defensive Line Coach at Yale in 2017, where he worked with Fordham head coach Joe Conlin and Fordham defensive coordinator Paul Rice.  At Yale he was responsible for weekly full opponent film breakdown, assisting the defensive line coach during individual periods, creating and editing the defensive playbook and new installations and assisting the defensive coordinator in drawing all scout cards and running the scout team during practice.
 
Prior to his stay in New Haven, Lenahan was a graduate assistant coach at Utica College in 2015 and 2016, guiding the cornerbacks in his first year with the Pioneers and the outside linebackers during his second. He handled daily positional meetings and structured individual periods during practice, and assisted the defensive coordinator with defensive pass game schematics based on weekly opponents. Lenahan also was responsible for weekly opponent breakdowns with other graduate assistants and assisting on all aspects of special teams in accordance to the head coach. He also served as the junior varsity defensive coordinator/head coach in 2016.
 
A 2015 graduate of Utica College where he received a degree in cyber security, Lenahan was a three-year starter for the Pioneers. He was named to the Empire 8 All-Conference Team in 2013 and 2014 and was voted defensive player of the year by his coaches and teammates in 2012. He holds school career records for most interception return yards (172) and interceptions/game while his six interceptions in 2014 is the second best single-season total at Utica.
