Corey Burns, former assistant football coach at Georgetown University, was named an assistant coach at Fordham University in February of 2023. Burns will be in charge of the Rams’ defensive line again in 2025.
Last fall, the Fordham defense led the Patriot League and was tied for tenth in the country with three defensive touchdowns and was second in the league on both first downs defense and red zone defense. The Rams were led by All-American and Patriot League Defensive Player of the Year Matt Jaworski, a senior defensive lineman who was a finalist for the Buck Buchanan Award.
In his first year at Fordham, Burns coached two All-Patriot League selections in Matt Jaworski (First Team) and Claudy Robinson (Second Team). Jaworski led the team and was second in the Patriot League in sacks with nine (0.82/game) and he was third in the League in tackles for loss (1.1/game).
Burns arrived at Fordham after serving as the defensive line coach at Georgetown University in 2022. Under his tutelage, the Hoyas defensive line more than doubled its sack total from 2021 to 2022. Burns mentored All-Patriot League selection Ibrahim Kamara and had two freshman, Mateen Ibirogba (7.5) and Ibri Harrell (6) as team leaders in sacks.
Prior to his stint at Georgetown, Burns served as a graduate assistant coach at Temple University and Colorado State, assisting in defensive linemen development.
With Colorado State, Burns helped the defensive line lead the FBS in team tackles for loss with 10.5, rank fourth with 4.0 team sacks and 12th in rushing defense, allowing 108.5 yards per game.
The Massachusetts native also spent a season as the special teams coordinator and defensive line coach with his alma mater, Tufts University, where he started all four years at defensive end and recorded 10.5 tackles for loss.
Burns graduated from Tufts in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in community health and a minor in economics before returning for his master’s in healthcare management & policy in 2017.
