#5 Water Polo Stays Undefeated with Win over #11 San Jose State

Eight different Rams score goals

Bronx, N.Y. – Most California water polo schools have outdoor pools, which makes sense due to the climate. Fordham plays its home matches indoors but with today's weather they may have been able to play in a large puddle outside. Though it was rainy outside it was all sunshine in the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatic Center where the fifth-ranked Rams defeated the eleventh-ranked San Jose State Spartans, 14-10.

With the win, Fordham stays undefeated on the year at 6-0 while San Jose State falls to 4-3.

Eight different Rams scored today, led by sophomore Diego Tresa, who accounted for four of the Fordham tallies while junior Andras Toth, sophomore Mark Dyck, and freshman Oktavian Veklyuk each recorded a pair of goals.

In the Fordham net, freshman Viktor Savic made 13 saves.

How it Happened
• The score was tied at three after a Toth goal with 2:17 left in the first, which started a run of seven straight Fordham goals that gave the Rams a 9-3 lead with 44 seconds left in the second quarter.

• Veklyuk had two goals in that run while Tresa also scored twice, including the capper that gave Fordham the 9-3 lead.

• San Jose State managed to snap the Fordham run with a goal in the waning seconds of the second quarter and used that momentum to record three straight goals to open the third quarter to make it a 9-7 match.

• A Tresa goal stopped the Spartans' run but the visitors picked up another goal to make it a two-score game, 10-8, at the end of the third.

• The two teams traded goals over the first half of the fourth quarter before a Toth score gave Fordham a three-goal lead, 12-9, and the Rams held on for the win.

What's Next?
• Fordham opens league play the Bison Invitational at Bucknell University on Sept. 19 taking on Bucknell, St. Mary's, and Mercyhurst.
