Softball Run Rules Iona Wednesday Afternoon

The Rams bashed a pair of home runs with back-to-back shots in the fifth

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – Bashing a pair of home runs in their first game in the Empire State this season, Fordham University softball defeated Iona, 10-2 in six innings Wednesday afternoon.

The Rams tacked on a pair of runs early before exploding for a five run fourth inning to open a 7-0 lead. Iona tallied a pair of runs in the fifth ahead of another three run spurt by Fordham in the top of the sixth, setting up a win by run rule after six innings.

Emilee Watkins tallied her second victory of the campaign, giving up just two runs on four hits over six innings while striking out five across the afternoon. On the offensive end, the Rams bashed a pair of home runs while scattering 12 hits on the day, with Eva Koratsis and Nicki Sudall leaving the yard Wednesday.

The Rams tallied their first run on a fielder's choice in the second inning, before doubling their advantage in the third on a RBI flyout by Sudall. Rallying in the fifth with five runs on five hits, a Sydney Wells groundout to make it 3-0 Rams with still a pair of runners on.

Drilling a first pitch shot to left center, Koratsis doubled the Rams' lead with a three run home run, followed two pitches later by a Nicki Sudall solo shot to push a 7-0 advantage. After Iona tallied two runs in the fifth, Erin Hoppe drilled a double to left center to bring in a pair of runners, ahead of a Sophie Nesturrick single to center to score Hoppe and put the Rams above the eight run rule.

Watkins would tally the final three outs in the bottom of the inning, handing the Rams their sixth win in their last nine games heading into a five-game stretch this weekend in Virginia.

The Maroon and White head to James Madison for the Lakeside Book Company Tournament hosted by JMU this Friday-Sunday.
