Baseball Slugs Past Richmond, 15-11

Andrew Kanellis, Tommy Markey, and Matt Dieguez All Hit Home Runs for Fordham

Richmond, Va. – (March 29, 2025) – If you cheer for a team from the Bronx on Saturday and they were on the baseball or softball diamond, you definitely needed an extra pencil or pen to keep up with the scoring.  With the Yankees scoring 20 runs and Fordham softball recording 27 runs in a doubleheader, the Fordham baseball team kept the theme going with a 15-11 win over the Richmond Spiders at Pitt Field in Richmond, Virginia.

With the win, Fordham has won seven of its last eight games to improve to 13-14 overall, 6-2 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond fell to 21-6 on the year, 4-4 in the league.

Both the Rams and the Spiders scored right away in the first inning with Fordham getting the better of the action with a 3-1 advantage.  The Rams picked up an RBI-double by Daniel Bucciero and a two-run single by Tommy McAndrews, while the Spiders got theirs on an RBI-ground out.

Fordham added to the lead in the third inning, as Andrew Kanellis connected on a two-run home run, his third of the year, to make it 5-1.  The Rams then opened up an 11-1 advantage with a six-run fourth inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by Matt Dieguez, his second of the season.

After Richmond answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, Fordham got another home run, this time from Tommy Markey, a solo shot and his first career home run to put the score at 12-4.

The Spiders replied with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the Rams came back with three in the top of the sixth for a 15-8 score.  Kanellis connected on a solo home run to left, his second of the game for the Rams, while Jack Brennan hit a two-run double.

Richmond closed within four, 15-11, in the eighth inning, but Fordham reliever Gannon Brady was able to lock down the final three outs in the ninth to secure the win.  Beau Elson (3-1) got the win in relief, pitching 2.2 innings of two-hit relief with three strikeouts.

At the plate, Bucciero was 4-for-6 with a double, three runs scored, two RBI, and a career-high four stolen bases.  Kanellis went 3-for-5 with two home runs, four runs scored, and three RBI with McAndrews and Markey each having three hits. Dieguez finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a home run and three RBI, while Taylor Kirk was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two stolen bases.

The final game of this series is set for Sunday at 12:00 PM.
