DAYTON, OHIO – Despite keeping pace with their opponents throughout the game, Fordham University women's basketball saw Dayton do just enough to keep themselves ahead to take a 62-57 win in the Buckeye State Saturday afternoon.
Dayton led for the majority of the contest, though Fordham kept the game within two possessions for much of the way. The Maroon and White split the season series with Dayton, dropping to 14-13 on the year, and 8-8 in league play heading into the final week of the regular season, with just two games left to play before the A-10 Championship.
Taya Davis paced the Rams offense with 20 points and five assists along with a pair of steals, joined in double figures by Irene Murua who finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.
Taking a few minutes to gather their footing Saturday afternoon, Fordham and Dayton sat at 6-6 more than 6:30 into the opening quarter, ahead of a 12-2 run by the home side to end the first and take an 18-8 lead.
After the Flyers pulled ahead by 12 points early in the second, Fordham rattled off ten unanswered points to pull back with two with 3:54 to play in the half. Dayton stretched its advantage briefly before the break, but the Maroon and White kept it within six when the halftime buzzer sounded.
Fordham worked its way back into the game throughout the third quarter, as Dayton held a two possession lead most of the way, ahead of a quick six points by the Rams to draw level with 3:37 to play in the frame, and trailed by just two heading to the fourth.
Keeping within two possessions for nearly the entirety of the final ten minutes of action, the Flyers did just enough down the stretch to trade bucket-for-bucket and hold at least a one point lead for the length of the fourth quarter.
The Maroon and White return home to The Bronx one final time during the 2024-25 regular season, hosting La Salle on Senior Day Wednesday night at 7:00 p.m. at the Rose Hill Gym.
