Fordham’s James Conway Sets NCAA FCS Career Tackles Record

Bronx, N.Y. – (October 25, 2025) – It was a record setting day for Fordham linebacker James Conway, but that performance was not enough as the Fordham Rams fell to the seventh-ranked Lehigh Mountainhawks, 27-6, at Moglia Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

The Mountain Hawks improved to 8-0 on the year and 3-0 in Patriot League play, while the Rams fell to 1-7 overall, 1-3 in the league.

Grad student linebacker James Conway led the Fordham defense with 16 total tackles, bringing his career total to 555, breaking Boomer Grigsby's (Illinois State) NCAA FCS record of 550.

Offensively, Gunnar Smith ended up 17 of 32 for 203 yards through the air and added a rushing touchdown.  Jack Betten had 87 of those receiving yards on two catches.

How It Happened

  • In the third quarter, the Mountain Hawks picked up a pair of touchdown drives, before Fordham got on the board with a 13-play, 65-yard drive that ended in a one-yard touchdown run by Smith to put the score at 24-6.
  • The Rams tried to pull within two scores in the fourth quarter, getting a 72-yard catch and run from Smith to Betten to put the Rams at first and goal from the Lehigh eight-yard line. The Mountain Hawks though would turn away the Rams at the one-yard line and force a turnover on downs.
  • Lehigh added a late field goal for the 27-6 final score.
