Cian Sahler Sets School Record with 22-Game Hitting Streak

Bronx, N.Y. – (May 4, 2024) – Saint Joseph's Owen Petrich hit two home runs and drove in four, as the Hawks evened the series with the Fordham Rams, taking game two by a 6-1 score at Houlihan Park on Saturday.

The Hawks (19-23, 7-10 A10) opened the scoring in the third inning, plating a run on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Picollo.

The Rams (19-26, 10-7 A10) tied the game at one in the fourth inning.  With two outs, Cian Sahler reached on a single to left for his second hit of the game.  He had extended his hit streak to a school record 22 games earlier in the contest, passing Bob DiVincenzo (1977) and Ray Montgomery (1988), who both had 21-game streaks.  Sahler moved to second on a single by Tommy McAndrews and scored on an RBI-single by Madden Ocko to tie the game at one.

Saint Joseph's regained the lead in the seventh, when Owen Petrich connected on a two-run home run to center, his ninth of the year.

The Hawks then got a sacrifice fly by Jakob Reed in the eighth and another two-run home run by Petrich in the ninth for the 6-1 final score.

Fordham could not figure out Saint Joseph's reliever Matt McShane, as he threw 3.1 innings of one-hit relief with four strikeouts for the victory.

Robbie Stewart (2-1) took the loss, allowing five runs on six hits over four innings of relief.  Starter Aidan Dowd went the first five innings, giving up one run on seven hits with three strikeouts.  At the plate, Sahler, McAndrews, and Ocko each had two hits in the game.

The same two teams match up for the rubber game of the series on Sunday at 11:00 AM.
