Men’s Tennis Defeats NYU, 6-1

Bronx, N.Y. – Before the Fordham University men's tennis squad heads to Florida for a match on Tuesday and the Atlantic 10 Championships later in the week, the Rams had one last home match on the schedule. Despite very unFlorida-like temperatures, Fordham powered through, defeating New York University, 6-1, on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts on Senior Day for its second straight win.
 
Fordham opened the match by taking the doubles point, winning two of the three doubles matches. Giorgio Soemarno and John Mascone won at second doubles for the Rams over Jingyuan Chen and Louis Frowein, 6-3, while Bingru Chen and Stefan Stojanovic took care of NYU's Devan Sabapathy and Zachary Freier, 6-4.
 
The Rams then took five of the six singles matches for the 6-1 victory. Dhillon Virdee-Oakley got it started with a 6-3, 6-4, win over Louis Frowein at third singles and Stephen Mozhaev followed with a 6-1, 7-5, decision over Zachary Freier at the sixth position.
 
After NYU took second singles, Chen defeated Sabapathy at fifth singles, 7-6(5), 6-4, and Nicholas Kanazirev rebounded after dropping the first set to Boren Zheng, 7-6(3), to win the since, 6-4, and the tiebreaker, 10-7.
 
Mascone closed out the match with a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6(4) victory over Rumaish Khastgir at fourth singles.

The Rams will travel to Florida to face Eastern Florida State College on Tuesday, April 23, at 11:00 a.m. as they get ready to compete in the Atlantic 10 Championships beginning on Thursday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.
