Rams Rally Late for 9-5 Win

Eight different players would come around to score, while five would tally at least one RBI

BRONX, N.Y. – Stepping away from conference play to close their homestand Wednesday afternoon, Fordham University Softball defeated Iona, 9-5.

Fordham would tally the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, but Iona would take a 4-1 lead with a big rally in the third. Bouncing back with two runs in the fourth, the rain began to fall and so did the runs as the Rams exploded for six runs in the fifth to break open a 9-4 lead, before giving up just one more to Iona in the final two innings.

Sydney Wells would finish the day 2-for-4 with four RBIs, while Nicki Sudall finished 3-for-3 with a pair of RBIs, one of five Rams to tally a run Wednesday. The Maroon and White would scatter 11 hits from seven different batters, with eight Rams coming around to score. Olivia Simcoe would pick up her first collegiate win in the circle, tossing three innings of one-run ball to help her side to the victory.

The Rams would break through early Wednesday afternoon, putting runners on first and second on their first turn at the dish, before Nicki Sudall drove a ball on the ground back up the middle to take a 1-0 lead.

Iona would rally for four runs in the top of the third, driving a ball to center field to put the visitors on the board, before tacking on one more later in the inning to take a 4-1 lead.

An early single in the bottom of the fourth was followed by a walk to Nogay, before Sydney Wells drove a two run double to the center field wall, narrowly missing the top of the fence, but putting her side within one after four innings of action.

Sudall would come through once more in the fifth, leading off with a solo shot to left field to tie the game at four. With the bases juiced a short while later, Enoch would walk to force in the go-ahead run for Fordham, and keep the inning alive.

An RBI groundout by Nogay put the Rams up 6-4, before another two-run double burst the lead open for the Rams who doubled up Iona at 8-4. Eva Koratsis would smack a single to center on the very next at-bat to put her side up five, and cap a six-run fifth inning for Fordham. Iona would tally one more run in the seventh, but that was as close as they'd get as Olivia Simcoe collected her first collegiate victory for the Rams, tossing the final three innings of the game.

Fordham now heads to UMass for an A-10 weekend set in Amherst, Mass. beginning with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
