WASHINGTON – Keeping within reach for the entirety of Saturday's match, Fordham University Volleyball saw their opponents pull away down the stretch multiple times, falling at George Washington in straight sets.
Keeping things close in the beginning of set one, George Washington would build a five point advantage at the media break, and would hold that lead to the end of the frame, taking a six point victory. In the second, it would be Fordham holding an early gap on their opponents, leading by three for much of the set until a late rally by the Revolutionaries brought that back even and ahead to take a 25-21 win and go up two sets to none on the afternoon.
With nine kills, Whitley Moody would top the attack numbers, ahead of seven from Audrey Brown and a career-high six from freshman Mila Micunovic as well. Splitting time at setter Saturday afternoon, Whitney Woodrow would dish out 13 assists, ahead of a career-best 12 from Emma Stammeyer who saw action in both matches this weekend. The Rams collected 36 digs as a team, led by seven from Moody and six apiece from Stammeyer, Woodrow, and Lola Fernandez.
Staying tight in the early stages of the afternoon, Fordham would find itself down a handful of points midway through the frame, which was enough for the home side to trade point-for-point the rest of the way to hold out a 25-19 win in set one. Battling back in the second Fordham would hold an early 11-8, and extend as much as a six point gap as the set progressed.
Using a strong rally late in the second, George Washington would draw back level at 20-all, and surged to the finish from there to take the set by four and push a 2-0 lead in the match.
Set three would see the two teams even through 10-all, before the Revs started to build a lead, quickly answered by the Rams to level the score at 14. George Washington answered with another run of their own, this time pulling ahead by four, which would be enough to hold off Fordham for a 25-20 set win to sweep the match.
The Rams will now make a pit stop back in The Bronx before continuing up I-95 to URI in the midweek for a Battle of the Rams in Kingston, R.I. Wednesday night at 5:00 p.m.
