RIVERDALE, N.Y. (Sept. 19, 2023) – Bronx bragging rights will stay with the Rams for at least another year, as the Fordham men's soccer team took down Manhattan, 2-0, at Gaelic Park on Tuesday night.
Daniel D'Ippolito and
Timo Hummrich scored the goals for the undefeated Rams (4-0-3), who defeated the Jaspers (1-4-2) for the second consective season. Hummrich bumped his team-leading goal total to five, while D'Ippolito found the back of the net for the second time.
Kai Griese recorded his third assist of the year on Hummrich's second-half marker.
Carter Abbott played all 90 minutes in goal, registering his second consecutive clean sheet and his third overall this season. The graduate student lowered his goals against average to 0.57 while his save percentage stayed level at .857.
The Rams set the tone early, as D'Ippolito recorded the game's first scoring chance in just the second minute of action, blasting a ball mere inches over the bar.
Fordham had a flurry of near misses over the next 30 minutes, outshooting the Jaspers 10-2 before finaly breaking through in the 36
th minute.
After drawing a foul just outside the box, D'Ippolito stepped over a free kick and buried a right-footed rocket into the upper-left hand corner of the cage to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
Manhattan nearly equalized in the 42
nd minute, as the assistant referre's flag stayed down on a long ball and allowed Gunnar Studenhofft to break free for a 1-v-1 attempt with Abbott. The graduate student made a brilliant charge to negate the threat and keep the Jaspers off the board.
The Rams extended their lead to a pair in the 65
th minute after Griese drew a free kick just outside the box on the right side. The graduate student from Regensdorf, Germany, palyed a ball toward the far post for Hummrich, who headed it past the keeper for his fifth goal of the season.
Fordham will return to Atlantic 10 action this weekend when it heads to Saint Louis for a meeting with the reigning conference champion Billikens.
