Baseball Blanks URI, 1-0

Cian Sahler Records Walk-Off RBI-Single, while Austin Sachen & Aric Berg Combine For Five-Hit Shutout

Bronx, N.Y. – (April 8, 2023) – Behind a super pitching effort from Austin Sachen and Aric Berg and a walk-off RBI-single by Cian Sahler, the Fordham Rams posted a 1-0 shutout win over the Rhode Island Rams in the Atlantic 10 baseball series finale on Saturday afternoon.

With the win, Fordham improved to 13-19 on the year, 2-4 in the Atlantic 10, while Rhode Island fell to 11-16 overall, 3-3 in the league.

It was a pitcher's duel between Fordham's Austin Sachen and Rhode Island's Braden Perry on Saturday, as neither budged much over the first seven innings.

Sachen threw the first 6.2 innings of the game, scattering four hits with a season-high 10 strikeouts, becoming the first Ram with a double-digit strikeout game since Matt Mikulski's final start of the 2021 season at St. Bonaventure.

Perry was just as effective, allowing only two hits with five strikeouts over seven innings of work for URI.

The game then turned to the bullpens, starting with Fordham's Aric Berg (3-1), as he pitched the final 2.1 scoreless innings, getting a crucial double play in the eighth to go with three strikeouts to keep the game at 0-0.

For Rhode Island, Zach Fernandez (0-1) got through the eighth inning, but Fordham was able to finally break the deadlock in the bottom of the ninth.  With one out, Fordham got three consecutive singles from Will Findlay, Zach Selinger, and Jack Vallario to load the bases.  Fernandez was able to strike out Sebastian Mexico, but could not get past Cian Sahler, who drove a single into the left center gap for the walk-off win.

Fordham will next be in action on Wednesday, April 12th, when the team hosts Columbia for a 3:30 PM start with the game on MSG and streamed on ESPN+.
