Softball's Late Rallies Not Enough in 8-7 Loss at Saint Louis

Rams Score Take Brief Lead with Four Fifth-Inning Runs, Get Within One in Seventh on Martine Homer

St. Louis, Mo. – Fordham softball rallied twice but ultimately fell, 8-7, in Sunday's series finale at Saint Louis. With the loss, the Rams move to 13-23 overall and 4-8 in Atlantic 10 play, while the Billikens improve to 18-22 and 10-4, respectively.

After being held to one hit over the first four innings, a Neleh Nogay triple, Fordham struck for four runs in the fifth, erasing a 3-0 deficit. Julia Martine led off with a single and stole second then scored on Amanda Carey's single up the middle. Two more singles followed by Kate McGuire and Michaela Carter to load the bases and Nogay stepped up and drove in two with a single down the left field line, prompting a pitching change. Sydney Wells pushed her team ahead with a sac fly to center, making it 4-3.

The Billikens responded immediately, however, plating five runs in the bottom half of the frame on three home runs, the first two off Bailey Enoch and the latter off Devon Miller in relief. The visitors put two runners in scoring position in the sixth, an Allie Clark walk and a McGuire single and advancement, but the hosts escaped the jam. Fordham made it a game in the seventh with a two-out rally as Wells singled and Enoch walked before a Martine three-run shot to left to get within one, though Hanner was able to prevent further damage by getting Clark to ground out.

Martine, McGuire, and Nogay each finished with two hits apiece. Four different Rams drove in at least one run and six tallied at least one run.

Fordham wraps up its long road stretch with a doubleheader at Saint Joseph's on Wednesday, starting at 1 p.m.
