Bronx, N.Y. – (April 15, 2023) – George Washington's Michael Kohn hit a grand slam home run, while Teddy Brennan struck out six over six innings, as the Colonials spoiled Fordham Baseball Alumni Day, defeating the Rams, 9-4, at Houlihan Park on Saturday.
George Washington (12-24, 3-5 A10) got things going right away with two runs in the first inning on an RBI-double by Eddie Micheletti, Jr. and a sacrifice fly by Noah Levin.
The score stayed at 2-0 until the fifth, when Fordham (14-21, 3-5 A10) rallied for four runs and a 4-2 lead.
Zach Selinger led off the frame with a walk and moved to second on a single by
Cian Sahler.
Michael Taylor followed with a two-run double down the left field line to knot the game at two. After a sacrifice bunt,
Ryan Thiesse plated Taylor with an infield single. Thiesse later scored on a balk for a 4-2 edge.
The lead did not last long, as the Colonials scored five times in the sixth inning for a 7-4 advantage. The highlight of the inning was a grand slam home run by Michael Kohn, his seventh home run of the season.
George Washington then added single runs in the seventh and ninth innings for the 9-4 final.
The loss spoiled Fordham Baseball Alumni Day, as the Rams honored the late John "Charlie" Vanacore '75 with a plaque to be displayed at Houlihan Park. Vanacore played for the Rams from 1972-75 and later became an assistant coach for the team in the late 1970s into the 1980s.
For Fordham,
Gabe Karslo (2-4) took the loss, allowing seven runs on 11 hits over six innings of work with four strikeouts. Sahler and Thiesse were both 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Taylor was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI.
The rubber game between the two teams is set for noon on Sunday.
