Baseball Comes Up Short Against Stony Brook

Ryan Thiesse Goes 2-for-4 with Two Runs Scored for Fordham

Bronx, N.Y. – (March 7, 2023) – Stony Brook scored four times in the top of the ninth inning to break up a 4-4 tie, as the Seawolves knocked off the Fordham Rams, 8-4, at Houlihan Park.

Fordham got off to a great start, scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead.  Ryan Thiesse and Cian Sahler led off with back-to-back singles, which was followed by an RBI-double by Peter DeMaria.  After Sahler scored on a wild pitch, Daniel Bucciero drove in DeMaria with a ground out for the 3-0 lead.

Stony Brook pulled within one at 3-2 in the top of the third, as Evan Giordano hit a two-run home run to right off Fordham starter Austin Sachen.

The Rams got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases on a single, a walk, and a hit by pitch.  TJ Wachter drove in Thiesse with an infield single to the right side for a 4-2 lead.  Fordham looked for more with the bases loaded but Sebastian Mexico ground into a double play to end the inning.

The Seawolves used the long ball again in the fourth inning to knot the game at four, as Evan Fox hit a two-run home run off Fordham reliever Connor Haywood.

The score remained tied until the ninth inning, when Stony Brook scored four times to win the game by an 8-4 score.  The Seawolves scored on a bases loaded walk to get the lead, and then padded the lead with a bases clearing double by Giordano.

For Fordham, Thiesse was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while DeMaria was 1-for-3 with an RBI-double and a run scored.  Nate Scott (0-2) took the loss in relief, allowing three earned runs on two hits with three walks over three innings of work.

The Rams continue their homestand on Wednesday, March 8th, as they host Saint Peter's at Houlihan Park, beginning at 3:00 PM.
