Bronx, N.Y. – (March 7, 2023) – Stony Brook scored four times in the top of the ninth inning to break up a 4-4 tie, as the Seawolves knocked off the Fordham Rams, 8-4, at Houlihan Park.
Fordham got off to a great start, scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning to take the lead.
Ryan Thiesse and
Cian Sahler led off with back-to-back singles, which was followed by an RBI-double by
Peter DeMaria. After Sahler scored on a wild pitch,
Daniel Bucciero drove in DeMaria with a ground out for the 3-0 lead.
Stony Brook pulled within one at 3-2 in the top of the third, as Evan Giordano hit a two-run home run to right off Fordham starter
Austin Sachen.
The Rams got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning, loading the bases on a single, a walk, and a hit by pitch. TJ Wachter drove in Thiesse with an infield single to the right side for a 4-2 lead. Fordham looked for more with the bases loaded but
Sebastian Mexico ground into a double play to end the inning.
The Seawolves used the long ball again in the fourth inning to knot the game at four, as Evan Fox hit a two-run home run off Fordham reliever
Connor Haywood.
The score remained tied until the ninth inning, when Stony Brook scored four times to win the game by an 8-4 score. The Seawolves scored on a bases loaded walk to get the lead, and then padded the lead with a bases clearing double by Giordano.
For Fordham, Thiesse was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while DeMaria was 1-for-3 with an RBI-double and a run scored.
Nate Scott (0-2) took the loss in relief, allowing three earned runs on two hits with three walks over three innings of work.
The Rams continue their homestand on Wednesday, March 8
th, as they host Saint Peter's at Houlihan Park, beginning at 3:00 PM.
