Bronx, N.Y. – (March 26, 2023) – On a picture perfect Sunday at Houlihan Park, the fans were treated to an entertaining, seesaw affair between the Seton Hall Pirates and Fordham Rams. In the end, Fordham scored five times in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull out an 11-8 win over the Pirates to complete a three-game series sweep.
This was Fordham's fourth straight win, improving to 10-14 on the season, while Seton Hall fell to 8-12.
After Seton Hall grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first, Fordham responded with a sacrifice fly to tie the game with
Will Findlay connecting on an RBI-double for a 2-1 advantage.
The Pirates then tied the game at two on an RBI-single by Will Gale in the second, but the Rams again answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame for a 4-2 lead.
Tommy McAndrews led off the inning with a solo home run to center, his second of the season. Later,
Ryan Thiesse had a sacrifice fly to score
Sebastian Mexico, who reached base on a walk and moved to third on a hit-and-run single by
Chris Genaro.
Fordham tacked on two more runs in the third, when Findlay hit a two-run home run to left, his fourth of the season.
Seton Hall pulled within two at 6-4 in the fifth, as Pat D'Amico hit a two-run home run to right center, his third of the year.
The score stayed that way until a wild eighth inning saw nine runs scored between the two teams. The Pirates scored four times in the top half of the inning, highlighted by a D'Amico RBI-double, to grab an 8-6 lead. Fordham followed with five runs in the bottom of the frame to go up by an 11-8 score.
The Rams loaded the bases on singles by
Daniel Bucciero and Findlay, while
Zach Selinger was hit by a pitch. After a line out, Mexico lined a two-run single over the shortstop to tie the game at eight. After Genaro walked to re-load the bases,
Ryan Thiesse hit a short ground ball back to the pitcher, who stumbled and came home with an errant throw, which allowed two Rams to score for the lead. Genaro later scored on a wild pitch to bring the score to 11-8.
Ben Kovel then came on in the ninth to record his second save of the weekend with a scoreless inning of relief.
Nate Scott (1-2) got the win in relief, allowing one earned run over 3.2 innings of work with two strikeouts. At the plate, Findlay was 3-for-4 with a double, a home run, and three RBI, while Bucciero was 2-for-5 with two runs scored. Mexico and Thiesse also had a hit and two RBI each in the game.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Tuesday, March 28
th, when the Rams host Hartford for a 3:00 PM game at Houlihan Park.
