Bronx, N.Y. – (November 4, 2023) – It was a historic day for the Fordham swimming & diving team on Saturday, as the Rams earned their first-ever dual meet sweep over the Georgetown Hoyas at McCarthy Pool in Washington, D.C.
The Fordham women picked up the team win for the fourth straight season over the Hoyas, 172-128, while for the men, it came down to the final event, winning the 400 freestyle relay to take the meet, 151-147.
With the dual meet sweep, it marks the first time since joining the Atlantic 10 that both the Fordham men and women are both 4-0 in dual meet action to start the year.
First for the women, the Rams won 10 individual events and both relays. Four women had multiple events, beginning with
Mya Bokerman taking first in both diving events with scores of 254.85 (1M) and 264.08 (3M).
Leire Martin then grabbed first in the 100- (56.64) and 200-yard (2:02.86) backstroke events, while
Ainhoa Martin won the 200-yard breaststroke in a pool record time of 2:16.87, as well as the 200-yard individual medley in 2:05.09.
Manon Compagner was the remaining dual event winner, earning wins in the 50-yard freestyle (24.09) and the 100-yard butterfly (56.01).
Additional event wins for the Rams came from
Emma Shaughnessy in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:04.12) and
Emilie Krog in the 500-yard freestyle (5:08.49).
In the relays,
Jane Brown, Shaughnessy, Compagner, and
Zoei Howard teamed to win the 200 medley relay in 1:44.51, while in the 400 freestyle relay, Fordham set two pool records. Compagner,
Alison Lin, L. Martin, and
Hope Nolan combined for a pool record time of 3:30.70, while Compagner's opening 100-yard freestyle split time of 51.77 seconds was also a pool record.
In the men's competition, Fordham took first in eight individual events and both relays.
Christian Taylor,
Guy Gropper, and
Alex Wilhelm led the way with two event wins each. Taylor was first in the both backstroke events, clocking in at 50.64 seconds (100) and 1:51.83 (200), while Gropper won the 50-yard freestyle in a pool record time of 20.89 seconds, as well as the 100-yard butterfly in 50.49 seconds. Wilhelm took the top spot in the 100-yard freestyle (46.78) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:54.00).
The other Fordham event wins came from
Wojciech Dutkowiak in the 200-yard freestyle (1:41.96) and
David Topi in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.56).
In the relays, the 200 medley group of Taylor,
Noah Althoff, Gropper, and Alex Shah won their event in 1:31.19, but it was the final event, the 400 freestyle relay that would determine the team win, as the Hoyas led by one point going into the final relay. The Rams came up big as Taylor, Shah, Althoff, and Gropper won the event to take the dual meet in a time of 3:04.06 with Taylor setting a pool record in the 100 freestyle with an opening split time of 45.85 seconds.
The Rams are next in action on Saturday, November 11
th, when they host Bryant at 1:00 PM.
