Providence, R.I. – (September 4, 2022) – The #17 Fordham Rams made the trek from Harvard to Brown to wrap up play at the Bruno Classic on Sunday. The Rams earned another split of matches to finish the weekend at 2-2.
Fordham started Sunday with a dominant performance against Gannon, winning the match by a 28-8 score. It was the most goals scored for the Rams in a game since 1971, when Fordham racked up 30 tallies against Penn State.
The Rams busted out big in the opening quarter with a 7-1 lead, followed by an eight-goal second quarter and never looked back.
Off the 15 field players to play in the game, 12 Rams had at least one goal, led by
Balazs Berenyi with six goals, three assists, and two steals.
Victor Schultz,
Nacho Ariste, and
Lucas Nieto Jasny all had three goals with Ariste adding four steals.
Jacopo Parrella ended with two goals, four assists, and four steals with
Gabriel Melillo,
Mark Katsev,
Brendan Cassidy, and
Jagger McMannis each having two goals apiece.
Michael Rahner,
Jason Hiremath, and Georg Papanikolaou rounded out the scoring with one goal each.
In match two, the Rams put forth a strong effort, staying within striking distance of #5 Pacific, but a four-goal fourth quarter for the Tigers sealed a 13-7 decision.
Fordham pulled out to a quick 2-1 lead in the first quarter, but the Tigers answered with four straight markers to lead 5-2 early in the second quarter. The Rams battled their way back to even, tying the game at five with an extra-man goal.
Pacific regained the lead with two markers but a last-second extra-man goal by Fordham left the game at 7-6 at the half.
Fordham would still be within striking distance after three quarters at 9-7, as
Curtis Vidinoff scored for the Rams, but the Tigers scored four times in the fourth quarter and kept the Rams off the scoreboard for the 13-7 final.
For the Rams, Parrella had two goals and an assist, while
Christos Loupakis had a goal and two assists. Melillo and Hiremath each had a goal and an assist with Vidinoff and Rahner having the final two tallies. In net,
Thomas Lercari ended up with 11 saves and a steal.
Fordham will next be in action on September 10-11 at the Princeton Invitational.
